Advantages: Safety and peace of mind

Disadvantages: Not attractive, but does that matter?

Burns and scalds are a major cause of injury and death to small children and yet, as a Nanny, I have always been shocked to see that very few people have a safety guard fitted to their cooker or hob. However, my grandchild has just reached toddlerhood and when I went to search for a hob guard I discovered that finding one is a difficult task.

Mothercare stock a very flimsy version, which appears to fit to the hob with sticky pads. I did not feel that it could be trusted to stay in place so I set off to try elsewhere. Argos and Index stock plenty of safety items but not this one. A couple of department stores had the flimsy version, as did some online shops. I tried a small specialist baby shop who told me that hob guards had never sold well and they no longer stocked them. They were however able to direct me to, of all places, Homebase.

At Homebase I found what I was looking for among a quite good selection of safety items which I had never noticed there before. For £19.99 I bought a sturdy metal-framed hob guard which can be fixed with screws either to the back of the cooker or to the wall behind. It is adjustable for different sized cookers, strong and safe.

RachyUK: yes I think it looks as though it would be ok, but obviously I can't be 100% sure not having tried it. Also, I have unfortunately thrown the box away so I can't say what it suggested. I am sure a shop like Homebase would refund if it turns out unsuitable.

Can you tell me if this looks like it might fit in a fitted hob/oven situation. I have cupboards either side of the oven and a door that folds outwards and down...I too am amazed that these items arent better stocked and more appropriate for today's kitchens.

I agree with you about the Mothercare hob guard. I only brought one about a month ago, and the sticky pads look as if they might be about to come off already.
