I think hospital births are a safety guard that no one should be complacent about. I know a lot of people are now choosing to give birth at home and whilst I can understand this, I would advise against this due to the experiences I have had personally.
My pregnancy was very difficult and if Im honest and absolute nightmare but having been scanned a few days before going into labour and being assured evrything was ok, then I did not expect probelms with the birth.
I went into labour approx 4/5 weeks early and due to persuation from my mum I went to hospital staright away, depsite being advised to go for as long as possible at home.
I am so glad I did this. I live 15 miles away from the hospital and it is approx a 30min drive due to traffic. From the moment my waters broke to my daughter being born was 3 hours exactly so staying at home could have been disasterous.
When my daughter was born she was not breathing and had no heartbeat, however due to the hospital enviroment a crash team was there within seconds and quickly had my daughter recusitated. She was then transffered to special care for seven days and with the excaption of problems with glucose levels she was a very healthy baby.
It has on many occasions crossed my mind ..what if?
What if I had not gone to the hospital straight away?
What if I had decided on a homebirth?
What if ther had not been a crash team.
the answers I do not want to know.
yes hospitals are not the cleanest places in the world. and
yes the food is disgusting and
yes we should have a better level of service
however I feel due my experiences that if I had not a hospital birth then the outcome may have bben very different
Summary: Better safe than sorry
