Advantages: Medical staff all around you

Disadvantages: uncomfortable surroundings

I absolutely hated my hospital birth, although I must admit i think this was due to the hospital I was in.

I must admit I did fel safe at all times and in capable hands although I think they made some disgusting decisions on my part.

I would have much rather have been in th comfort of my own home and been able to have all my family around me but unfotunately this was not an option.

The one thing I appreciated most about my hospital birth was the amount of medical staff around me, this made me feel safe although I do think that this may have been why so many things went wrong as there were so many differences of opinion in doctors and medical staff I did feel I was being trated badly.

I got moved about a lot and this was quite distressing as I would much rather have settled in one place, I was in labour for 4 days though so this was not an option for me.

I did not appreciate the fact that my partner was not allowed to be with me the whole time, especially whilst I was in labour. I had to spend the first night alone as they said it was not right for a man to stay on the ward. I needed to support of someone and the staff on this first night was not very supportive.

One thing I noticed was the heat of the wards. Whilst I understand that they have to keep it warm for the babies I was so hot I felt I was going to faint on many occassions. This ws really distressing andanother thing that made it really uncomfortable.

Being a first time mum I expected to get a lot of help fr the staff with my baby when she was born but I got none. I was given two bottles and left till morning which was really distressing as I couldnt even walk. I really wanted the support of my partner and my family and for this reason wish I could have gone home.

I would recommend having a hopsital birth if there is a risk of complications as there are trained medica staff at hand all times but if you have a normal pregnancy with no complications I would very much recommend a home birth with the help of a mid wife. Given the chioce again I will definately opt for a home birth!!

Summary: It is for some and not for others

What a horrible experience for you. My own experience was actually very positive so I guess I was lucky! Caroline xx
