Advantages: Medical backup on hand
Disadvantages: Could get your needs over looked by busy staff
On the whole I personally would always have a hospital birth for the main reason that you never know what is going to happen and if I or my baby need medical attention to save our lives it is there on hand.
Maternity care is best done in the community. No trailing up to the hospital with long waits. Just pop along to your local surgery where in theory you see the same person each week . When I did go to the hospital the waits were always long and the waiting rooms were chaos.
I elected for a water birth originally. I let them know over the phone when I went into labour and they said just come in when I was ready as my waters had gone. They were friendly but efficient on the phone. When I arrived at hosptial I had to wait 10 minutes for my labour room as they were just finishing cleaning the water birth room. It was spotless.
Anyway 5 hours later I was asking for an epidural - no problem. I was taken to another labour room - again spacious and clean. My midwife and her student were very attentive and lovely.
I needed forceps and the doctor was great. No hanging around waiting for her.
Lovely toast served afterwards by the staff. I never felt rushed or harassed. It was all in my own time.
My partner felt a bit ignored but they had warned him there was no cafe service for him!
Baby and I were doing fine so down to the ward. Here we expereinced a real mixture of brilliant and rubbish midwives. The rubbish ones just brushed over your worries or made you feel bad for wanting to top up breast with formula. Teh best ones answered your questions and even gave you a hug!
Hospital births are best when you feel in control with the safe secure backup of medical attention.
Summary: Hospital every time
