Advantages: On hand care, medical equipment on standby, rest after birth

Disadvantages: no home comforts, less sleep

When I first discovered I was pregnant last year, I didnt have to think about where I wanted to give birth. I knew straight away that it would preferably be a hospital.

Although I am not good with hospitals, this was my first baby and I didnt want to take any chances. Both mine and my husbands thoughts were we would rather be in the right place if any urgent attention was needed for either me or our baby.

During my pregnancy I only visited the hospital for my 13 week and 20 week scan. I was very lucky that I had a straight forward pregnancy and the rest of my anti natel care was in the community with community midwifes.

At 36 weeks I started having contractions, as this was my first baby I didnt know what to expect and kept tellling myself this was not labour I still have 4 weeks to go. As the day progressed my pains got more intense and closer together. At 5.30pm I phoned the delivery suite at my hospital and they told me to come striaight in. I was examined at 7pm, after 4 hours my little boy arrived safetly. I did have a quick and fairly straight forward labour but he was tiny and did need to go a heat mat immediately. There was also one point during labour that his heart rate dropped, I am just so glad I was in hospital for his to be detected and monitored on big machines.

I was in hospital a total of 4 days as my little boy had mild jaundice and did not want to feed. It was a tough time and I received excellent care from all midwifes and healthcare assistants.

If we are lucky enough to have a second child, I will definately opt for a hospital delivery second time around.

Summary: I would always choose a hospital delivery, so I feel safe.
