Advantages: clean, comfortable and all knew what they were doing

Disadvantages: Not much communication between staff

i had my son at mk general in jan 2006. i had a natural birth which lasted somewhere in the region of 40 hours altogether. upon arrival at the hospital i was examined within 20 minutes and told that i was nearly 3cm dilated so i was taken straight down to labour ward where i was given a nice private room and some very helpful injections of pethidine to help with the pain. after being strapped on to the machine to monitor his heart and left to my own devices for 45 minutes the midwife came in and actually turned the machine ON. An hour later i was told i was not progressing quick enough and was moved back to maternity ward where once again i was in a private room with a television and a bathroom just opposite. Within an hour i was in what they call established labour and was moved for the 3rd time, back to labour ward. 2 more top ups of pethidine followed by an episotomy (with 7 stitches) and he was here. i was then left to rest for a while before being taken to maternity in a wheelchair. i was told that my son, being 5wks early had trouble controlling his temperature and was propmptly placed in a bed next to the window AND a radiator. The bed, strangely enough was extremely comfortable and breakfast of cereal or toast was self served in the day room. I was then sent home that day having been told nothing by the midwives of how to bathe him or clean his cord but i cant really complain as the facilites where clean and comfortable and the staff were generally quite friendly. I did return to have my second child there a year later.

Summary: Overall a good experience, apart from the pain.
