Advantages: Facilities there when you need them

Disadvantages: Not the nicest environment

I have have given birth in hospital twice. The first experience was amazing - it was a planned elective c section for my identical twin girls, in the high risk unit. It went fantastically well, even though they both had to go to special care for some time. My second experience, at the same hospital, was incredibly different. I had good midwife care antenatally, but a botched spinal by anaesthetist and emergency section with both hubby and I by that point in shock was completely different to our first experience at the same hospital.

My postnatal experience was awful - other women who had C sections were being discharged after 2 nights, I stayed in 3 nights and that was only because I was under observation after the aforementioned botched spinal. There was one midwife to what seemed like at least 30 women, and I was left in a pool of blood for several hours before someone would come and help me.

However, all that aside, I would still go for a hospital birth every time over a home birth. However unpleasant the hospital experience is, and my second time was incredibly unpleasant, the facilities are there should you need them - and I am quite sure that not all my children would be here if I had opted for a home birth for either of the deliveries. I am a huge believer that it is not the birthing experience that matters, it is the safe delivery of the baby, and I really do think that hospital is the best place for this.

Summary: not a great place, but everything you need is there.
