Advantages: Great care, equipment
Disadvantages: none
When I had my daughter a year ago, it was a wonderful experience and i dont think I would have anything else but a hospital birth. I was already in hospital with high blood pressure and still had 5 weeks to go. The day I was due to go home, I had backache and really bad 'trapped wind'. (or so i thought!) I told the consultant and he told me to go home and if i wasnt feeling any better by that night, then to come back in. I asked for an internal just in case, and he didnt mind performing one, even though he was really busy. It turns out I was 6cm dilated and I had to go straight to the delivery room after phoning my birth partner. Suddenly my back hurt like hell, worse than contractions, and I was screaming hysterically. The midwifes were great, they didnt care that I was calling them all the names under the sun and I was saying swear words i never even knew existed! They put my mind at ease and the consultant came in checked me over, it turns out my daughter was facing the wrong way so her spine was on my spine and causing friction. I got rushed to theatre just in case I needed a C-section but it turns out forceps did the trick. They had to phone in a surgeon and a aneathasist and they were great, telling me I disturbed their dinner! (they were joking of course, at least, I hope they were!) Everything worked out fine in the end, my daughter was born premature and weighed 4lb 14oz and very healthy, just a short stay in neo-natal unit to keep an eye on her. The moral of the story is: I dread to think what could have happened had I gone home that day, not knowing i was in labour, my baby was in distress and could have died if it wasnt for the hospital. Trust the hospital and they do try and make it as personal as possible. Just in case something go's wrong.

- 18/04/01 Good to hear people saying positive things about hospitals for a change...still think I'll do my best to stay away though. Makes me shudder just thinking about the smell! |
