Men are infertile when their sperm are unable to fertilize the egg. Women are infertile when they have failed to become pregnant after a year of regular intercourse. Infertility affects about 15 percent of couples and has multiple causes, some of which are affected by nutritional factors.

Women who wish to become pregnant for the first time are more likely to succed if they regulate their diet so that they are neither excessively under or over weight. About 12 percent of infertility in women who have problems releasing eggs from the ovaries (OVULATION) is due to weight, such cases are equally divided between women who are overweight or underweight.
