First Love. Hmmm. A long time ago now… It was 1986 when I met Patrick. He was at the next school I would be going to, a year above me. I was going there to study my A-levels for two years. Although I’d had boyfriends before, Patrick was special. He was tall, dark and handsome. He was sporty, well-liked and intelligent. He introduced me to new sorts of music, including Pink Floyd who are now one of my favourite groups. We were only together six months or so. He left me for someone in his year. It hurt. It still does, in a kind of faded, passive way. I still bear a ‘P’ scar on my left wrist, which I etched into my skin repeatedly with a variety of sharp instruments that year. I had planned to get a love heart tattoo over it, but never have. First love is always special. You will always remember that person. I last spoke to Patrick in 1996. I was about to get married but wasn’t completely sure about it. (In hindsight, of course, I was right as the marriage only lasted eight months.) Two of my concerns about husband-to-be were that he swore too much and he smoked cannabis. My phone conversation with Patrick revealed that he did both too, so even he wasn’t perfect. I haven’t had any contact with Patrick since. Last I heard, he was in St. Andrews. Ironically, he had ended up going to Bristol University and I have ended up in this city too. I doubt I’ll ever see him again, but he is still an important part of my past and one which I will never forget. But of course, love is something you usually experience more than once and while that was my first proper ‘Mr. Someone Special’, there have been others since. Loving and being loved must be one of the most magical experiences there is. Nothing quite surpasses that feeling of happiness and security, being confident in the knowledge that you are loved and you have someone to love. You
know you are in love when… He wears a different jacket and you nearly have an orgasm on the spot! Whenever you recall his face, he’s always smiling. Just like Kylie, you Can’t Get Him Outta Your Head. You doodle love hearts and your names entwined. You say you love him in all the languages you’ve ever learned. Your fantasies about him start with kissing – and sometimes that’s enough. You’d prefer to be with him than be online(!). You are fascinated by everything he says, even if he’s talking about football. You keep playing love songs – convinced that they’re all about you and him. You can’t think of ten things to write, the list seems too long… Here’s a quick poem I wrote… You just walked by, You caught my eye, You wouldn’t believe how you make me feel, Just one glance caused my stomach to dance, I hope this love is truly real. I love your face, I’ll share your space, I want to kiss you and hold you tight, You cannot see what you’re doing to me, But it just makes me feel so right. Yours in celebration of the perfect emotion, Karen xxx
