Yesterday was Halloween - it is not a day I celebrate - nor do I understand why anyone else does. It, to the best of my knowledge, is something to do with All Hallows - a pagan festival, celebrating I don't know what. For some bizarre reason our country has recently become more and more obsessed with allowing our children to roam the streets at night, dressed in devils suits or something equally sinister, knocking on strangers doors and asking for treats. In return they will not perform a 'trick' on the occupiers - usually throwing raw eggs at the premises. Have we all gone completely mad? Why on earth are we teaching our children to be mini mobsters - little protection racketeers - "give us sweets and we won't vandalise your house" Good grief! The day before yesterday we had 2 kids knocking on the door in masks - one of them was wearing the 'Scream' mask. My 21 year old daughter has nightmares about that film and whenever she sees that face it freaks her out. It was fortunate that I answered the door or she would have probably given birth to the baby she's carrying right there on the doorstep. Needless to say I sent the early kids packing. Yesterday evening I decide that I would ignore the door knockers. By 5pm they started - they were hammering on the door - they would not give up - one group stood knocking - very loudly - for over 10 minutes. It's just unbelievable - I ended up shouting at them to go away and tell their friends not to bother coming to my house. Unfortunately it didn't stop more coming - all evening a steady stream of ghouls - ghosts and devils hammered, to no avail, on my door. Am I just being a meanie? I don't think so. My kids used to have halloween parties in the safety of the home. Games, fancy dress, and spooky stories - all relatively harmless - but never walking the streets. We have the good old USA to thank for that ritual. I wi
ll never cease to be amazed at the way parents will get sucked into the money-making schemes of the marketeers, millions of pounds spent on costumes and sweets for this the most bizarre of festivals. WAKE UP BRITAIN - WE DON'T NEED THIS! If I were elderly I would be terrified by the sight of these kids on the doorstep - never mind what they do if you don't provide them with treats. Have your halloween fun in the safety of your home - don't teach kids that it's right to beg and threaten. We have enough problems in the world.

- 11/11/01 Oh, I completely agree! I hate Hallowe'en & we have never lewt our kids go out trick or treating. When kids come to our door, our dog barks like mad & that usually scares them off! Excellent opinion. |

- 06/11/01 Well said, couldn't agree more. I think it is a dreadful tradition that has suddenly got more sinister and dangerous. My in-laws are getting on and are terrified of upsetting the children who come around begging for sweets. Our dog nearly attacked one child we opened our door to who had on a horrendous mask. The dog was just scared, but he would have got the blame! |
