Advantages: Stops dangerous diseases in children.

Disadvantages: Can apparently cause autism in children.

I have had 9 nieces and nephews born, and I am hopefully going to have my own little one on the way soon, and the MMR situation has been a subject which has come up alot in my life.

The MMR is the Measels, Mumps and Ruebella Vaccination given to babies at about 18 months old (i'm not 100% sure on this, so correct me if I am wrong!).

For years there has been a debate about the safety of the vaccination as people say it can "develop autism" in children, as far as I am aware there is no actual scientific proof that this is the case, and the reason the issue has come about is because children show signs of autism at the age the vaccination is given.

My child will most definitely be given his or her MMR vaccination, the way I see it, even if the vaccination DID cause autism...I would MUCH rather my child develop this, than the potentially fatal measels, mumps or ruebella....!

All of my nieces and nephews have had this vaccination as well as me, and all of my family. It isn't even a question for me about my child getting the vaccine, even if I had to pay for each needle to be given separetly, I would do this. My childs safety is much more important to me than the fact they "could" develop autism...I have a feeling that this is a 1 in a billion chance of happening...and as I said until there is sufficient proof that it IS the cause of childrens autism, then I would never stop my child from having the important vaccination!!!

Autism, although a nasty disability which causes distress to family and friends of the affected, is not the end of the world, and it is something which people can get through in life with, and can lead a nice happy life if its not the stongest strain. Whereas with the illnesses which you could contract without the MMR, may very well result in death, and I myself could not cope with the grief of the death of my child due to me not getting them vaccinated against Measels, Mumps and Reubella.

Sorry this is only short but I feel it gets across my opinion :-)

Summary: I would never refuse to let my child have this vaccine.

I have two nephews with autism, I doubt sister in law would share your views that it is nothing too worry about. I have only just read it and if you think this version is sensitive I dread ot think what it was like before. Also concerning the comments on the dangers of measles and one comment above me about how "so many people let their children die" or something, note that there have been 28,000 cases of measles in the UK between 1998 and 2006. Of these cases there were ZERO deaths amongst healthy children and two of immuno deficient children.

I wish I hadn't come back to re-read this. Your knowledge of autism is less than zero if you think all people affected can live "a nice happy life". You really need to stick to things you know about when posting in Speaker's Corner as the combination of strong opinions and ignorance doesn't reflect well upon you.

Your comments that people are "picky" about your take on autism are now extremely offensive. You clearly have NO experience of autism (not your fault), but actually for most people finding out their child has autism, and especially severe autism, is indeed the end of the world as they know it. Perhaps it might be helpful to try and learn something from this review - ie don't make strong statements about things you don't know anything about personally rather than getting confrontational and angry about it. I don't have a child with autism but have enough experience of spending time with a child who does to avoid statements that are ill informed like "nice happy life". Also wit til you have a child before saying you would rather your child got autism (not linked to this vaccine anyway) than measels. I honestly don't mean to be unkind, and sorry you feel you can't win but your angry comments here are not helpful.
