Advantages: It protects your child against measles, mumps and rubella
Disadvantages: there are suggestions that it is linked to autism and crohns disease
The last 2/3 years have been confusing regarding the mmr vaccine. It has been said that the vaccination has been found to have some relationship with autism and also crohns disease. However, to what extent this is true is not yet known. It hasn't as yet been proven. The mmr vaccine has been used successfully for many years. It works in the following way: a very weak form of measles, mumps and rubella viruses are used in the vaccination. These are injected and then go on to produce antibodies against these diseases. Children in between the ages of 12 and 18 months are given the vaccination. MMR has successfully been used in countries around the world. Finland has been using the vaccination for approximately 20 years with no reported problems. Our children are very important to us, and no parents want to put their child in any danger. The number of MMR vaccinations given in the last 2 years has dropped by approximately 4%. The assumptions that MMR is related to autism and crohns disease are based on a study that took place in London in 1998, which involved 12 children. These are a few pointers to help parents decide what they want to do. Whether you have your child vaccinated is up to you. Personally I still have a few months to make my decision but at the moment I haven't decided against having my baby vaccinated. Most children have been vaccinated and so far I have not come across anyone who has developed any of these conditons.
