My daughter has just turned one, and I know that in the next few months I will be recieving a letter from the doctors surgery telling me her MMR is due. I'm dreading it!
I don't think it matters how much you look at the facts, parents will always wonder if their child will be one of the 'unlucky ones'. Every parent I have spoken to has waited on baited breath for months after the MMR, constantly checking their children for signs of Autism. I think it's sad that it has come to this, more and more people are having less faith in the NHS and their medical staf, so it's not just the effects of this injection, but also 'is it given in the right dosage?'. Unfortunatley, I know someone in the last week, who has lost a one year old baby, probably due to the fact that penicillan was given at such a high dose because it was too much for the baby to take, but it still under enquiry. So with all these worries, is it worth taking the risk? Yes, I think it is. Imagine the guilt you would have if your child died from measles, sounds harsh I know, but that is the reality of the situation. My daughter will be having the innoculation, I think it will be worth it in the long run, I hope it will be anyway. Good luck to all those who have to make the same decision as me, I hope you are all brave enough to carry it through.
I just have to add, that I know of a study done where a suvey of doctors was conducted. 'Apparently', 46% of doctors say their child would not have it. I am not convinced of this, my health visitor told me that her kids and grandchildren had them done, and all the doctors in my local surgery had also had their family done (it's a very large practice) so I would'nt be worried about these so called surveys. Ask your own doctor his personal view.
