Advantages: Erm can't say i found any

Disadvantages: It can strike anytime

The main thing i hate about being pregnant is the dreaded morning sickness that over 90% of pregnant women experience.
I don't know where they got the word 'morning' sickness from because quite frankly it can hit you anytime of the day or night.
I found out i was pregnant quite early on and had a inclining as being violently sick every morning, in the afternoon and evening wasn't something i normally experienced, at first i thought i had a stomach bug but after taking 3 tests it turned out i was pregnant which explained everything.
I was being sick all the time and sometimes passed out, it wasn't nice feeling and i thought it would never end, i couldn't keep many foods down, and i think for a week i was living on toast, biscuits, sweet tea and water, concerned i went to my doctor who wasn't that much help he said that the baby was still getting enough nutrients and to come back in a couple of weeks time if things got worse and he would prescribe me some anti-sickness tablets.
When i got home i researched 'morning sickness' and tried to find ways to help prevent it. So i have put together my top ten things that helped me..

* Make sure that you get plenty of rest because tiredness can make the nausea worse.
* Drink little and often, rather than in large amounts, because this may help to prevent vomiting.
* Eat small, frequent meals that are high in carbohydrate and low in fat. For example, savoury foods, such as toast, crackers, or crisp-bread, are usually better tolerated than sweet, or spicy, foods.
* Eat cold meals, rather than hot meals because cold meals do not give off the smell that may provoke nausea.
* Eat plain biscuits 20 minutes before getting up.
* Avoid any food, or smells, that trigger your symptoms.
* Avoid drinking drinks that are cold, tart (sharp or bitter tasting), or sweet.
*Acupuncture can be effective in the form of acupressure, which involves wearing a band on your arm, as research has shown that putting pressure on certain parts of the body may cause the brain to release painkilling chemicals.
* Ginger- is said to help reduce the symptoms of nausea and vomiting, but some ginger products are unlicensed, but things like ginger biscuits and ginger ale can help.
* And if that fails ( changing your lifestyle diet) the best way it to see your GP who can may recommend a short-term course of a suitable anti-sickness medicine.

Scientists are not entirely sure what causes morning sickness but do have a pretty good idea, things include..
-An increase in the circulating level of the hormone estrogen.
-Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) due to the placenta draining energy from the mother.
-An increase in human chorionic gonadotropin
-An increase in sensitivity to odors, which overstimulates normal nausea triggers.
-The body's effort to detoxify thoroughly for the health of the unborn child.

While we'll all hate morning sickness, they say it's a sign of a healthy baby, some mothers only experience for a couple of weeks, some for the whole pregnancy, but remember it won't last for ever, be strong and at the end of it all you will have something that makes it all seem worth while

Summary: Although we cannot cure it, there are ways of helping

Morning sickness is a horrible thing. I couldn't keep anything down when I was pregnant

I had that (long time ago now!) and could only manage ice lollies. Recent studies show it can be due to the high oestrogen if you're having a girl.

I had all day "morning" sickness with my first baby and existed on crusty bread and butter for weeks,as that was the only thing I could eat without throwing up!!! It was all worth it in the end. Another tip I was given was to eat charcoal biscuits (you can get them at health food stores) or to grate some root ginger and make a tea infusion with boiling water.
