Before I was pregnant I believed morning sickness to be, as the name suggests being sick in the morning. I thought it was just one of the normal symptons associated with pregnancy. How wrong was I!!!!! I think it should be renamed all day sickness and misery!
I'll take you through my experience of the dreaded sickness. I found out I was pregnant very early on I was about 4 weeks gone and was extremely happy. Pretty much as soon as I found out I started to feel queasy. I've always had a pretty weak stomach so thought I could handle a bit of sickness. I would get up in the morning and as soon as I sat up I would have to run to the toilet to vomit, I would then set of to work vomiting in a back alley on the way, once on the bus I would be retching and deep breathing trying not to be sick at least til I got to work, next I would clock in at work then run to be sick again, this went on constantly throughout the day. At this point in time I worked in a call centre, I was forever putting customers on hold to run to the loo haha!! I was also getting up in the night to be sick so wasnt sleeping much either.
Anyway after a couple of days of this I decided to ring in sick I was really unwell, couldnt eat anything and wasn't keeping much fluids down either. Everyone kept telling me it was a good sign being sick it meant my pregnancy hormones where strong! I tried eating ginger biscuits as ginger is supposed to help with sickness? but I couldnt physically put anything in my mouth so that didnt work.
On day 3 after finding out was pregnant I went to the doctors in tears because I was horrified to think this could go on for another 8 months! he basically said there wasnt much he could do it was a part of pregnancy and gave me some anti sickness tablets, I couldnt keep them down long enough to have any effect, oh and he gave me some gaviscon, yuk!!
On day 5 my other half came home from work and I was led on the settee with the same glass of water he had left me with in the morning I had managed about a quarter of it, I hadnt moved all day except to run to the toilet. My hair was lank my skin was dry and greyish in colour, I was terrified this would be hurting my baby. My other half rang the doctors who said to bring me in straight away, she did some urine tests and found I was very dehydrated, she offered me 2 options either go home and try to work through it or she would admit to hospital and I could go on a drip, I decided hospital was the best option.
Once in hosptial I was diagnosed with Hypermesis (severe morning sickness) I was put on a drip to rehydrate me I felt much better within a few hours of being there and the sickness stopped, I felt like a fraud!! I was given a scan to confirm I wasnt having a multiple pregnancy because severe sickness can be a sign of this. After 3 days in hospital I was discharged, I would love to say the sickness didnt return, but it did, it was still really bad and I was still pretty miserable, I didnt go back to work for a while I had about 4 months off work in total, when I was at work I was given special duties which meant I could go the toilet whenever I wanted. The sickness eventually stopped at about 33 weeks and at 34 weeks I got pre-eclampsia but thats another story!!!!!
The point of this is for anyone out there who knows someone pregnant who is suffering with sickness, dont just think their being soft, it can be really awful. My experience has influenced my choice of whether to have another child, I will have one in the future but it does frighten me to think I could be like that again especially when I have my little boy to look after now.
Summary: It ruined my pregnancy!!
