Advantages: The end result does make it worth it

Disadvantages: You feel lousy and it can affect other things too like liver function

It has been seven years since I had hyperemersis gravidarum. It was without doubt one of the most remembered periods of my life.

I, like most women had suffered with the crushing tiredness that comes in early pregnancy, almost imperceptibly I began to lose interest in food - I was unable to decide what I wanted to eat. One day when I was about 7-8 weeks pregnant I woke feeling completely shattered and decided after I was up and dressed that I couldn't face work and rang in sick, little did I know at that point I would be gone for nine weeks.

That first day I was sick four times, after a week I went to the doctors and was signed off for 1 week, and given some tablets that I had to put under my lip until it dissolved - I try to give everything a fair shot but these were useless. One week later and sickness still going strong I was back this time I was given suppositories (one a day - just what you need when you feel awful) however I did my duty but to no avail.

The days went by and I was hardly eating and was only drinking minimal amounts as a mouthful of water could make me be sick three times, and I would consider how thirsty I was before drinking. By now I was in bed all the time - and despite the title of morning sickness was predominantly sick through the night - about 7-8 times. Waking up and moving my eyes was enough to start me off.

I have to say the doctor said my baby was fine describing her as the perfect parasite that fed off me whilst I just melted away. The doctor was always optimistic that this phase passed too.

After five weeks I have lost over 2 stone and my partner rang the doctor and said I was by now very weak and he needed to come out to see me. After a few questions - he described me as "abit dry the last time he saw me" my skin was flaking and hair like straw, and there was nothing more he could do and had me admitted to hospital. When I came out of hospital he told me I was the first morning sickness case he'd ever admitted.

At hospital I was immediately put on a drip which was like a good cup of tea and they started running tests. My liver function was sky rocketing and they didn't know why and they thought maybe I had viral hepatitas, I hadn't but until they ran tests to establish this I had to be barrier nursed. In the quest to investigate the liver I also had this scanned.

In the mean time I was givem my first emetic injection (leg or bottom) and was told I could now eat! No way I thought - but tried 3 meals later I was sick 4 times. No problem we will try again tomorrow, and so we did with an emetic and a suppository and proceeded with the eating - it worked. The injections had a 4 hour validity and after that it was up to me to say if I started to feel sick again and I would get another one. I had about 7 or 8 altogether.

I was in hospital for a week and stayed on a drip the whole time and on two occasions had a potassium drip due to low levels of the same. And I was constantly having bloods taken to test the spectrum of bodily levels and to monitor my liver. As my appetite returned the liver function levels reduced, and it transpired that I was just in a self perpetuating downward spiral with sickness affecting the liver.

After hospital i was signed off for a further 4 weeks, and it was only at this point I truly appreciated how weak I had become, when I had some impetus to try and do things again.

My appetite was never brilliant for the duration of the pregnancy but after that bout it seemed fantastic . Unlike other women I didn't suffer with the sickness for that long and as I was cured so to speak the experience never put me off doing it again.

Summary: Can be resolved but requires hospital drug intervention
