Advantages: Stop morning sickness

Disadvantages: Doesn't work for everyone

When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, I was so happy. She was very much a planned baby. I had the vision of wafting about in beautiful maternity wear, with all my friends and family saying, "oh pregnancy really suits her", and "is she blooming". Oh course, the reality wasn't like that, as I found out in a major way.

I did the pregnancy test on a Saturday, when I was nearly six weeks pregnant, and was sick for the first time on the Tuesday. At first I tried to grin and bear it. People told me that it would get better, that I shouldn't let it get me down, and that "after all you are only pregnant(!)". Well, my sickness didn't get better, it got worse. I was signed off of work, and spent about six weeks either in bed, on the sofa or with my head down the toilet. The rest of my life just came to a halt. I didn't have the strength to do anything, and if I tried I was sick straight away. Any of my friends who tried to phone me during this time will testify to this. I had to cut off many a conversation in the middle because I knew I was going to be sick.

Things did slightly improve when I reached fourteen weeks, and I was able to go back to work. However the nausea and vomiting did continue off and on the rest of the pregnancy, with the last time I was sick being the day before my daughter was born.

She is now two, and the thought of a baby brother or sister came up. I was really was dreading becoming pregnant again, for no reason other than morning sickness. It was hard enough last time, but with a toddler as well, it just seemed like a nightmare. Then, over Christmas I had that familiar feeling of nausea, took a test, and found I was pregnant, quite unexpectedly. My joy at finding out was slightly clouded by the fear of being so ill again.

I decided to look at various sites on the internet for help, including, obviously Dooyoo. I found an opinion by Cammet who mentioned a tape c
alled Motherwell, which were supposed to help with morning sickness. (They have now changed the name to Morningwell- but it's the same product). She included the website address, (www.motherwell-mums.co.uk), so I decided to go and have a look.

On the website it explains about the vestibular system within the inner ear. It is this that keeps us balanced. They have found that when you have morning sickness it is because this system is communicating with the brain, telling it you are not balanced. The brain then sends a signal saying 'you feel sick', to try and make you rebalance, which of course you can't do. How Morningwell works is by blocking the messages the vestibular system sends, so in turn your brain doesn't send the message to your stomach. This is done with music that contains special tones and frequencies. You can't hear anything different, it just sounds like new age lift music!

Basically all you have to do is listen to the tape through headphones, they say it won't work without them. They also say not to stop your normal activities while you use the tape, but to keep going. It doesn't have to be loud, as long as you can hear it, it's working. This is great, because it means I can use it and still hear and talk to my daughter. You simply put the tape on when you start to feel sick, and stop when the feeling goes away. I'm finding that I need between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on how sick I am feeling at the time.

I know it sounds ridiculous, an audio tape which stops you feeling and being sick, but for me it's working. I am now about 7 ½ weeks pregnant and haven't yet been sick. It is also meaning I can carry on my life more or less normally, which is very important for my daughter. I have heard that it doesn't work for everyone, which I suppose is to be expected. I was told lots of cures for morning sickness last time, which did nothing for me. However, if you are experienci
ng bad morning sickness, these tapes may just be worth a try. Even if they don't stop the sickness, the music is very relaxing and pleasant to listen to.

Should think that the tapes would work for travel sickness - they are very similar feelings! Lucille as I have said before I am so glad that these tapes work!!!! If I ever fall pregnant again I will be relying on them!

Kathryn-The cat's called Mrs Emma Peel.

gollygumdr ops- I can't see why not, as I'm sure I read somewhere else that morning sickness, and motion sickness are very similar. You would have to play the tapes through headphones, so it would be expensive if you have more than one child, as you would need more than one tape. Maybe worth a go through.
