Advantages: Lots of lists available in books and magazines

Disadvantages: Big heavy bags

Packing your hospital bag can always be tricky specially when it is your first baby. I read many books, magazines and websites to learn what I needed to take in my hospital bag, one list was longer than the other. Then I got a list from the hospital and prepared the stuff mostly according to that list.

Next I found two suitable bags, one bag for after the delivery and one bag to before and during labor.

****What I had in them,****

**Bag used before and during delivery**

- Snacks for my husband and me (don't remember either of us eating)

- Some magazines (couldn't bother to read while I was in pain!)

- A face towel (Used a lot)

- A pair of socks (in case it got too cold I wanted something for my feet, but didn't use this)

- A small pillow which I clutched onto every time I had a contraction (I don't remember how this fit into my small bag!)

- May have had other things in it, but I don't remember everything I had in a bag 2 years ago

**My hospital bag**

- All my personal stuff like toothbrush, toothpaste, nightgowns, hair brush etc

- Camera and lots of spare batteries (you wouldn't want to miss taking pictures as soon as the baby is here)

- My mobile phone (to call everyone I wanted to tell about the baby)

For baby

- 5 body suits

- 3 blankets

- 4 burp clothes

- 1 soft clothe to wipe baby

- 24 nappies

- Baby wipes

- Baby shampoo, baby bath and baby oil

This is all I remember, I may have taken much more than this as my bags were really full and had a hard time closing it every time I opened it. The first time even though I packed my bag well in advance my husband had to come home many times to get stuff that I hadn't packed. The second time around being more experienced things were more organized.

Summary: A look at what you would need in your hospital bag

I gave birth prematurely and didn't actually realise I was in labour so I had the worst packed bag ever....a bottle of water, a banana and a book?? Yep, that was all.....I'll know better next time!! Caroline xx
