Advantages: A list helps you remember everything
Disadvantages: You'll forget something!!
I had a baby 5 months ago and I spent ages trying to decide what I actually needed to take into hospital when I gave birth. I still managed to forget a few things, I imagine most people do, but here is my list of essentials to pack for when you go in to hospital to have your little bundle of joy!
I packed two bags, one had the things I needed to have with me whilst I was in labour and for the first couple of hours afterwards and the other bag had mine and babys overnight things in. In bag one (for labour) I had the following;
* A good book - I never got to read my book as my labour was very quick, but a lot of people are in labour for ages (or if you have an epidural) and you will want something to take your mind off everything. A good book or magazine is essential!!
*Ipod - for the same reasons as above music is great for keeping you busy!!
*Something to eat - I took some bottles of drink and a few things to eat with me for whilst I was in labour. Like the book I never got to use them but they came in really handy after I had given birth as I was starving!!
* Old clothes (or ones you dont mind throwing away) - I bought a cheap night dress to give birth in and threw it away straight after.
* A flannel/towel - I used a warm flannel during labour to wipe my face and it was great. Face wipes would probably also do a good job.
*Toiletries - for when you have a shower or wash afterwards.
*Clothes for baby - I packed a couple of sleep suits (in different sizes newborn and 0-3), a couple of vests, a hat, scatch mits and a shawl. As soon as baby was born the midwifes dressed him for me and I was so glad I had everything to hand.
*A new nightshirt/feeding bra/dressing gown - for afterwards.
*Maternity pads - Not nice to think about, but you will need them.
* List of telephone numbers - to share the good news!!!!
* Coins for the payphone (although my hospital let me use my mobile)
In my second bag I pack another nightshirt, a change of clothes to go home in and a selection of clothes for baby!! I also packed nappys, baby wipes and a little teddy for the baby.
At the end of the day if you forget something dont worry, your other half will be happy to get anything you need and family and friends will go out of there way to help you!! Good luck and make sure you pack your bag in plenty of time.
Summary: Pack your bag in plenty of time and dont worry about forgetting something.
