Advantages: good pain relief, helps you rest before the birth, lasts a few hours

Disadvantages: can make baby drowsy if given too close to birth

I found out i was pregnant with twins at my 12 weeks scan, on the weeks leading up to the birth i looked up and read about everything you could think of to do with babies. I read up everything about labour and birth so that i would have some idea of what was to come as it was my first pregnancy.

The only one i had ruled out was pethidine. Ill tell you the reasons for it i had read that it can make baby quite sleepy and my thoughts were justified when my partners sister had her baby boy. She had an injection of pethidine to help her through the labour however when her baby was born it took them ages to get him to cry. This was due to the pethidine that had made him very drowsy. I hated the thought of my baby been whisked away because they couldnt rouse them.

Anyhow i was induced at 36 weeks and they used the gel. I was told by the midwife that the gel can cause some pain but with most they dont get any, i guess i must have been one of the unlucky ones because i had excrutiatin pain from it been inserted. AS silly midwife gave me a paracetamol, as if that would take the pain away, anyway after 4 hours of pacing corridors a nicer midwife asked if i wanted a shot of pethidine. I was very reluctant at first however the midwife did reassure me that pethidine only makes baby drowsy if given too close to the birth and she said i was some tme away.

I had the pethidine shot in my bum, she wasnt very nice about putting it in lol but it was great i laid on the bed and must have drifted straight off not waking until the morning when they came to give me some more gel.

So i would advise it as a pain relief but i wouldnt advise it too close to when your going to give birth, sometimes its hard to predict how long the birth will take but ask your midwife.

I would have it again though it helped me get some rest.

Summary: Great pain relief and helps you get some sleep but too close to the birth makes baby sleepy
