Advantages: quick to work, acts as a sedative

Disadvantages: can make you sick and weak

when i went into labour with my son in jan 2006, aged 19, in had a pretty serious fear of needles and had read somewhere that if you move during an epidural injection you can be paralysed due to close proximity to the spinal cord. To this day i still dont know how true that is but it put me off in a big way. i had no visions of being able to go without any pain relief so i decided on pethidine. at 3 cm dilated i was given the first shot of this, along with an anti sickness drug. Minutes later i was throwing up everywhere and the midwife concluded the antisickness did not agree with me. I was given gas and air for the next 3 hours as i was still unable to keep anything down. A different antisickness drug was given with the next dose, and suddenly life was great again, i could sleep for a while and recover a bit. It made my head feel kind of light, as if you are drunk but it also made my legs go a bit weak but i was too tired to be walking around anyway. a further 5 hours passed and another dose was given. I feel at this point i should mention that my son was 5 wks premature and had no problems breathing when born, however i was so relaxed from the pethidine and gas and air that i was unable to push enough to get him out and ended up with 7 stitches from an episiotomy. I was also so tired from the whole event of giving birth that i just wanted to sleep.

Summary: i had this again with my second child, just had to work out which antisickness to have.

I had it with my 2nd and will never have it again, I was so sick from it that I couldn't hold her, I was gutted.
