When you dislike your newborn (Post-Natal Depression)

It sounds terrible doesn't it and stupidly of me, I used to think ' oh, snap out of it woman!' That was a terrible thing of me to think as I now know what it is like not to have that instant maternal insstinct, a great warm feeling of love that gushes over you in the delivery room. When my daughter was born I had all that and my second pregnancy was eagerly anticipated. We couldn't wait, especially as it was a boy that I really wanted. When he was born the first thing I thought was that he was ugly. He didn't look like my daughter or my partner or myself, he didn't look like a member of the family. When they wheeled me down to the maternity ward I remember hearing him cry and just ignoring him. I went home the same day and it all came flooding back, I was so miserable because I was so tired and I started to regret having this baby that had changed my perfect routine. My health visitor came and gave me a written test to complete then after adding up my answers she informed me that I had missed out on PND by one point! I was horrified that this horrible depression was calculated on a points earned basis. Some women have terrible depressions that can drastically affect their mental health and judgment and it doesn't seem to be taken as seriously as it should. Summary: |
