Advantages: If they stay on then they stop your bab cutting themselves

Disadvantages: They don't stay on (ever)

When I had my first baby I was bombarded with lovely little outfits and pale blue babygro sets for him to wear. A lot of the sets consisted of a babygro, a bib, a hat and a pair of scratch mittens. The first thing I did was wash the outfits in Non boi powder then we soon got around to putting him in the clothes. He looked so cute in white and pale blue covered in head to toe with these lovely outfits.

If you have a newborn you will soon notice that they will be covered in cuts and scratches from there tiny paperthin fingernails. My son used to look like a scene from Edward Scissorhands he cut himself to pieces so much. This is where the scratchmittens come in. The first time I used them I placed them on his little paws, turned my back for all but two seconds and................where were the mittens? They had fallen off onto his head. I quickly placed them back on his little hands before he cut his face again, stared at him for a while and touched his lovely baby skin then popped out of the room to do something. When I got back, guess what? The mittens were off again. I persevered for a few more times then I got a little frustrated and chucked them in a drawer ever to be seen again!

Now I had a dilemma, my baby was cutting himself to pieces with his uncontrollable fingernails (no matter how short they were) but the damn scratch mitts wouldn't stay on! Who ever invented such a rubbish thing? Anyway back to the problem. I realized after a little thought that I could try some socks. I put them on his dinky hands and they actually stayed on!!!! Yippee! I'd found a solution. Needless to say I have been using this ever since and although some people laugh and mock, my baby is self-harming anymore! Give it a try and throw the scratch mittens out of the window.

Summary: What a load of rubbish

When our girls were in SCBU they had little scratch mittens that tied on round the wrist (to stop them pulling out their tubes and IV drips as much as anything) but socks are just as effective, Caroline xx
