Advantages: keep feet warm, save wear on carpets
Disadvantages: ?
Well own up, who has bought someone slippers for Christmas? A most unimaginative, boring present, useful though I haven’t had, or bought slippers as Christmas present for anyone for ages. I do not often wear Slippers prefer bare feet, (hate wearing shoes anyway) my husband does have a pair .He sometimes wears them (he gets cold feet) I have bought many a pair for my daughter. So why am I writing about slippers? I saw this category, no one else has written an op on slippers here, I thought it would be easy to write about. I think there might be opps on slippers elsewhere , but I guess it might be a parenting issue , something to buy your children or aged parent at any time of the year.! Dictionary definition, Slipper.A comfortable slip on shoe that is worn indoors. / A comfortable shoe that is worn for dancing. I will tell you the little I know about slippers. Slippers are readily available to buy in the high street shoe shops or department stores. Are available to buy from many on line shops on the Internet. Can be bought from catalogues such as Kay’s or Great universal so no need to trudge the shops looking for some. . PRICES I think they start at around £8 /£10 upwards. Children’s slippers are delightful, designed in ways that are attractive to children . encourage their wearing slippers with animal faces and ears, slippers designed with the Childs favourite characters e.g. Thomas the tank engine. Slippers for a child need to have good soles that are non slip and need to fit well so the child does not fall over You can buy ones that are like boots and enclose the ankle .I think those are good less likely to fall of the child’s foot. Some have little zips in to fasten them; some have a strap with a Velcro or press-stud fastening some are just slip on. I would recommend a child wears slippers in the house, keeps feet warm and protects the fe
et from stubbing and from sharp objects stood on. Slippers for the man in your life Well my husband would not thank me if I bought slippers for him for Christmas. My mother has bought him some in the past “ nice checked plaid ones” Yes you can buy nice checked plaid ones, simple single coloured ones one with humorous designs on, or sheepskin moccasin types My husband owns a plain boring single coloured pair with a fleecy lining at the moment, he bought them himself. Slippers need to be able to be washed easily. I have known many a smelly pair! Personally I do not own a pair at the moment I think my mother may be thinking of buying me some for Christmas. Ladies slippers do come in a variety of designs and fabrics. Simple slip on stretchy slippers made of velour/ towelling easy to pop in your bag if you are travelling. Slippers with fur around the ankle to keep your ankle warm suede moccasins with a fleecy lining, ones with quilted lining, ones with soppy animals ears, Fluffy slippers all cosy. Slipper socks yes these can be warm and cosy they have a non-slip tread on the sole of the foot and come in many designs. There are slippers designed for use by people with foot problems, sensible ones for the elderly housebound, orthopaedic slippers designed to give the foot support Some of the children I have worked with wear a slipper like shoe as they have badly formed feet, which will not fit in a shoe and need a softer fabric to keep their feet warm and safe. Dancing slippers, comfortable shoes to dance in, ballet shoes, and didn’t Cinderella lose her slipper at the ball, isn’t there a red slipper in the wizard of oz? Isn’t it a romantic picture of a prince putting on a fair maidens slipper the image of tenderness and love. ohhhhhh don’t let me get started on romance and love. My mother in law wears slippers a lot she
says it helps keep her carpet clean and does not wear the carpet out so quick as heavy shoes, makes us take our shoes off as soon as we enter the house. There are several plants given the name of slipper like the ladies slipper orchid Anyway that’s a different tale. Time for a cup of tea , thanks for reading I shall try to write on a better subject next time ……any suggestions? LOL Mary

- 02/01/03 I also have trouble finding the right size, but I'm a 3! Another problem is that slippers don't seem to live very long, they fall to bits sooner or later.
Cinderell a wore a glass slipper, and it's not my favourite story since the poor "Ugly Sisters" got bits of their feet lopped off when they tried to get into it. (This is often left out in the Victorian, sanitised versions, but I assure you it's in the original.) There are some interesting fairy stories about shoes, for instance the Red Shoes. Hmm, they seem to be all the non-feministy stories about keeping women down, rather disappointing. Interesting, though. |
