Advantages: Builds immune system and essential nutients

Disadvantages: Not as easy as you may think

Before I fell pregnant I had always said I would definately breast feed my baby for at least the first 3 months. My husband was not as keen as he was worried he would not have a chance to bond with the baby and help out with feeding.

However when I was pregnant he supported me and knew how important it was to me to try to breastfeed. I really wanted to give our baby the best start possible and that I wanted to provide our baby with all the correct nutrients and build his immune system as much as possible. I read lots of articles and book on breastfeeding trying to learn as much as possible.

It all changed when my baby decided to arrive 4 weeks premature, he was tiny. No one had ever told me how difficult it can be to get a baby to latch on in particular and premature tiny baby. My baby could not latch on at every feed midwife would try but he was so tiny and sleepy he did not have the strength. I would express onto a spoon and feed him from there, after 4 days in hospital trying to get him to breastfeed, I started to get very low, he wasnt getting the food he needed I was stressing out, I was expressing and feeding him that way. I was then allowed home I continued to express and top up with formula but my milk dried up very quickly. After 3 weeks I switched him onto formula, I felt very guilty doing so but he had turned into a hungry baby and needed more than i was able to express.

He is now 11 months old and a very healthy baby he has very few colds and looking back although I say next time I will try to breastfeed again as deep down I wish he had be strong enough to feed from day one but he has thrived on formula.

My moto is a happy mum gives a happy content baby and if you can breastfeed dont get too stressed as it stressed my baby and the minute I relaxed he relaxed and was happy and to me that is the most important thing.

Summary: Do whatever make you and baby happy
