Advantages: Cheap, always there, good for you and baby

Disadvantages: Pain and getting started

Like many mums when I fell pregnant I thought I'm going to breast feed my baby as i was aware of all the health benefits for baby and for me. Around me I had a mixed group of breast and bottle feeding mums. The breast feedign mums made it look easy. The bottle feeders were full of horror stories about pain, bleeding nipples and babies who sucked for hours.

Anyway I dutifully went along to the local NHS breast feedign workshop whcih looking back was rubbish. Putting a doll towards your breast is not like breast feeding!

After giving birth the midwives at the hospital were really good at getting you started and getting your baby on. The trouble starts when your milk doesn't come 'in' quick enough and you go home, your nipples start to bleed, your baby feeds for an hour each time and your knackered!

What saved me was Lanisoh cream - i just rubbed loads in, the local breastfeeding support group worker who did two home visits and my baby who stuck at it despite his mum being rubbish at times!

We've had ups and downs along the way but we are still going at 7 months and have never had to use formula. I am now so glad i stuck at it and got the right support.

Summary: Breast feeding was the best for me and my baby

Congrats on still breastfeeding. I think it's one of the most amazing things a mum can do for their child and it's a shame for people that cant do it.

I breastfed my first til he was 17months at which point he weaned himself because I was 8 months pregnant. I'm now on number 2 and hes going strong at 3 months.

I breast fed my daughter (17 years ago!) - and you're right - no-one can really teach you to breastfeed, and can't really help you. You do need a level of committment.

W ell done for continuing - one thing I found really frustrating (and I did feed for a year - never a bottle) was other people's attitudes - you'd have thought I just whipped a boob out for the world to see!
