Advantages: Antibodies and time off!
Disadvantages: none
I have two children, and both have had the pleasure of being both breast and bottle fed. My first child was a crier and a very hungry baby. I tried breastfeeding him, but found it very difficult to master and we were both getting very frustrated, so I gave him a bottle and we never looked back. He was not at all bothered where the food was coming from as long as it arrived, and I was happy to hand over a couple of feeds to my Husband so that I could relax and have a little time off. This caused harmony, the baby still got breast milk with all the goodness and antibodies, but he also got formula which helped him to feel satisfied and sleep (a little. All the books say that babies get confused by mixed feeding but this really was not the case as Luca had his first bottle whilst I was still in hospital. Baby number two arrived 12 weeks ago, breast feeding actually came very naturally this time. (I don't know if that is practice or just that you are alot more relaxed with subsequent children) I could quite easily have carried on using the breast exclusively, but have now put her on 2 bottles a day, one last thing in the evening (To help her sleep I hope) and one at lunchtime. Both of these can be given by other people or whilst i am out and about, without any embarrasment or difficulty in finding a "suitable" place to breastfeed. (last time I sat in the park watching my son playing and didn't have to get very cold in the upper region!) Lara did not take so readily to the bottle, but with a little perseverance she now guzzles quite happily at whatever I ofer her. So to summarise - Breast or Bottle? Both for me!
