I have two children, one daughter aged six and a son aged three. When my daughter was born I had already made the great decision to breastfeed much to the delight of my midwife! But when the time came for the all important first feed, there was nothing I could do to force that child to latch on! In the end I had to resort to holding a bottle teat in place over my nipple, I knoe what you are thinking, it was embarrassing for me too and not like the pictures of happy mothers in the parenting magazines! Eventually, after six weeks, she got the hang of it and latched on herself and that is where she fed for the next 11 months! I was so proud of myself! My son however fed for only 2 weeks as he sucked a mixture of blood and milk before he had to be weaned on to formula. To me, this was so upsetting and I cried if anyone mentioned it. If there was only one thing in the world I could give my child then it would be a good start on breastmilk, but I now saw myself as a failure. I then saw a differnce in the way my kids developed. My son coped perfectly without the supposed goodness of breastmilk and was a much more robust, or fat, baby, he also had fewer illnesses than my daughter. My point is; breast is best if you can do it, and if you can't, then so what! Ladies; do what feels right for you and not what you think everyone else wants you to do. Enjoy being a mum! If it hurts it's bad for you!!! Summary: |
