Advantages: antibodies, cheap, convenient
Disadvantages: restricts mother
Yes breast is best, not always possible but it is best. Formula milk comes a very close second if you are unable to breast feed but if you have a new baby due I would certainly recommend breast feeding at least for the first months. I am a qualified Nursery nurse and a mother ok so my daughter is 25 and feeding her own baby but I just felt I wanted to write and tell you the benefits of breast feeding.Iwas taught breast is best and experience showed me it was. The most important one is that breast milk contains antibodies to infections for your baby to protect him/her during their first months. The second is bonding. It is a natural procedure giving you the satisfied feeling of providing the best for your baby that sweet little head nuzzled against your bosom suckling makes you feels good. The baby is getting to know mother her scent her taste her warm loving arms, learning to love and trust that person. A third is convenience yes it?s easy to prepare, no fuss with sterilizing bottles boiling water making feeds. When baby wants feed in the night no need to get out of bed. All you need is with you already. Easy if you are travelling. Yes breast-feeding is convenient. Breast feeding is possible anywhere, alright so be discreet about it respect others but there is nothing to stop you breast feeding on train or plane in library or Café. Maybe only a little shyness at first but that will be soon overcome. Some places have mother and baby rooms but I would not want to eat my diner in a cramped space a toilet so why should baby. How long to go on breast-feeding Well as long as you feel right doing so and baby wants it. Weaning begins about 5 months upward it is recommended now to leave it till later rather than earlier. Weaning is a slow process. Somewhere between 1 and 2 years breast-feeding will stop as babies needs satisfied by other food and drink. Breast-feeding should be easy but some new mums find it difficu
lt, not enough milk, and baby wont latch on. A variety of problems. Disadvantage is that Dad can not get in on the act enjoying feeding his baby, The new mother could express milk and Dad could give the occasional bottle , good idea to get baby used to another feeder in case mum and breast have to be elsewhere. So my advice is breast feed if you can it will give baby a good start in life. Thanks for reading Mary

- 18/09/07 As a baby I was allergic to breast milk so formula was the only way I could feed, but with my sister mum prefered to breast feed. |
