Advantages: can stop buying diapers, gives child a sense of accomplishment for child
Disadvantages: possibly wear and tear on adults nerves
Potty Training can be one of the most stressful times of your life, if you let it. It can become a power struggle and will if you don't realize that each and every child comes to that point in their lives at their own pace. It can be frustrating if you listen to the other parents bragging about when their child left the diapers behind. Close your ears to all the bragging and relax. Relaxing is the name of the game in this hard task to teach. But you can make it harder then you have to by putting pressure on the child. One of the things we adults have to remember is just because we want our child potty trained doesn't necessarily mean they are ready to be potty trained. Most adults are in a hurry and this is just one of those things that can't be rushed. One of the things that has to be remembered about a child is they have to be physically ready. They have to have the muscle control and the knowledge that when I get this feeling that means I need to use the potty. There are certain signs to look for to give you a clue as to whether your child is ready to be potty trained. Do they want their diaper changed soon as it gets wet or dirty. Do they come and tell you before they go in their diaper. If so it's time to get the training pants out and let them go at their own pace. Remember the key word in potty training is patience and praising. That's important because kids thrive on praise. Kids look up to adults so when a adult gives them a negative response that affects the child's self esteem. One of the worst things to do is compare the child with other children because each and every child is different and learns at different paces. One of the things I would suggest is making sure the child has on comfortable cloths that are easy for them to get off. This way they don't have to depend on
a adult to take their pants down when they have to go potty. Remember most of the time if a child is busy doing something they like they will wait until the last moment to head to the bathroom so therefore if they have cloths that they can get off it will be easier for them. Over the years the potty training techniques has changed but the remaining constant is patience and loving the child through it all.

- 20/09/01 Yes, people do want to rush things. And it's stressful and pointless. Ours pretty much "trained" themselves, I think. |

- 18/09/01 I must admit, I was dreading having to do this, yet it was all over and done with, without much interference from me.
The more we panic about these type of things, I think the worse we make it.
Ohh, aren't I the wise one after the event. ;-) |

- 17/09/01 Patience is the key. What is the point of boasting that your 18 month old is out of nappies when they have 7 or 8 accidents a day? |
