Advantages: Yes they make baby smell nice but they are not essential

Disadvantages: They are a waste of time

When I had my first baby boy my mum gave me a huge wicker basket full of toiletries and things that she used on us when we were tiny. To be honest hardly any of it has been touched and I am on to my second child now. I really believe you can go through pregnancy and have a child without spending tonnes of money on powders and creams and all of that sort of stuff. My little Elijah is four months now and I haven't used any products on his skin apart from a bit of Sudocreme. Society kids you into thinking that you will need a huge box full of bits and bobs or you will be a bad mum. Well I say 'Don't believe that rubbish and look at the list below!'. It's what I used throughout my pregnancy and in the first few weeks of my boys lives.

Pregnancy
When you are pregnant you have to be careful about what you use on your skin because it can soak through and affect your unborn baby.

I used Bio oil on my skin. It's supposed to help prevent stretch marks. Unfortunately it didn't work for me and I was absolutely covered by the end. I am now a firm believer that if you are going to them then you won't be able to stop it. The Bio-oil did keep my skin soft and moisturised though.

Lush bath and bubble bars
All of the lush products are safe for pregnant women and although I generally hate having a bath I did fancy one every now and again during my pregnancy. It helped me relax and sleep better.

Lush fair trade foot lotion
Carrying that huge bump around for months on end plays havoc with your feet so I invested in this cream. Obviously it's not particularly essential but it smells like peppermints and kept my feet nice and soft and refreshed.

For baby
My second baby was covered in lanugo when he came out even though he was supposedly 8 days late. The midwife recommended that we didn't bath him until this cleared because it's good for their skin and rather than wash it away it would be better to let it soak into him. So for a week we just washed his hands and face. He's my list of baby essentials.

Cotton wool
Midwifes and health professionals recommend that you use cotton wool on your babys butt because wet wipes can strip away the skin and cause redness and rashes. Iused this for about a week with warm water but got fed up of the hassle. My baby got a sore bum anyway so we swapped to wipes and it cleared it up.

Wet wipes
I used these from the very start with my second and he had no ill affects from them. They are so convienient and easy.

Just water!
Water is the most amazing thing. I bathed both my boys in just water for the first few months of their lives. I didn't use shampoo or baby bath or any added extras and they always came up smelling lovely and they were always clean. My mum is always shocked when I say this to her because as I said before in her generation you were brainwashed into thinking that you should use tonnes of stuff on your baby's sensitive skin.

Sudocreme
I swear by this cream. It is pretty amazing stuff. It's great for nappy rash and other sores and cuts. A small pot of this goes a very long way and works wonders.

Nappies
I'm not sure if this comes under toiletries but sanitary wear would so I suppose this is similar in a weird sort of way! Whatever you choose reusables or disposables you will definitely need a good supply of these (unless you do what some people do and start potty training from birth!) because your baby with go through tonnes in the very beginning.

So there we have it. This is the bare minimum and I really think you don't need any other products so don't be lured in by the consumers my loves!!!

Summary: Water is the best baby toiletry you can find.

I do think there is a lot of hype around what you are supposed to need for a baby.

Merry Christmas!
