Advantages: can always keep each other company
Disadvantages: they fight but then who doesnt
I have many sets of twins in my family, my husband also blessed with some in his too.
Any sort of birth amazes me when I really sit and think about it, but a multiple birth amazes me even more.
How can a womans body carry one child? But then to carry more than one child at any one time is truly spectacular as far as I'm concerned.
My cousins are non identical twins, boy and girl .. well man and woman now. They are both 30+ and when my auntie was pregnant with them she didn't actually find out she was carrying two until she was at least 7 months into her pregnancy. Now though with systems being far more advanced, and there being more available on antenatal units etc you are able to find out how many you are carrying at your very first scan which is usually when you are 12 weeks pregnant.
Twins can either be Identical or Non Identical. People tend to assume that if you are 'identical' twins you are the absolute double of each other. That is not the case - in fact if you are truly identical it actually means it is your genes and dna which are identical - looks come afterwards. Sometimes twins who look nothing like each other to the eyes of you and I could actually be 'identical' twins.
Non Identical Twins are usually made when two fertilized eggs are placed into the uterine wall at the same time - this happens when two seperate sperm tadpoles fertilize both of the womans eggs. I done my research on this when my daughter became pregnant with her twins. I found it all fascinating to the point that I was constantly on the net researching multiple births and pregnancies .. I think I was more scared then her. Identical twins are in fact made by just one egg - but that one egg splits - whereas with a singleton (one baby pregnancy) it stays as one egg and fertilizes into just one fetus.
These were just basic facts I looked up.
Although my cousins are twins I have never really thought much about it and how different it is to be around them, when my daughter became a mum herself though for the first time to her twin boys it was a stunning thing to watch.
To see my daughter bond with two such small babies, both being so different yet coming from her womb at the same time. They were born just 2 minutes apart, and weighed near enough the same with just 3oz between them, both over 7lb though.
They are coming up 2 now and I have seen them grow from helpless little souls into young boys, with gorgeous personalities, they fight the way older siblings would whether it be over toys, food god knows what. Yet they are so loving.
It is hard we love both of them equally but you can't help but have a little something for each of them individually. It is hard not to feel guilty that you are paying one more attention than the other. I always ask myself do I smile more to him than I do him, do I pick him up more than I do him and I am just the Grandparent. How my daughter does it with 2 babies on her own I don't know, I always say it's hard enough with one baby and she just laughs but she has never known what it is like to bring just one child up.
To have twins now so close to me I feel blessed, especially as they are my first grandchildren. Of course just have one child is beautiful, I know I have had two .. both grown well out of nappies and sleepless nights of course. It is amazing to watch how close they are with each other, although they are non identical twins you could just see this instant bond between them as soon as they were born and it is still there now.
Summary: really this about my twin grandsons
