Advantages: Doing something together, they have the undersatnding too of what's ahead

Disadvantages: none

When I wanted to have a child I bought a big book explaining what happens in conception, through pregnancy , delivery, and after. I called it the bible. I read it so that I had an idea of what to expect and as I reached each step I read the relevant chapters. It was great to understand why I was feeling the way I was feeling etc. My husband on the otherhand had no idea what to expect especially at the delivery and after. He read snipets from the book when I read them to him but that was that. He couldn't make it to the midwives appointment because of work but did manage to attend the scans. It was at the ante-natal classes that it really hit home about what we were to expect.

We went together to the 3 sessions laid on by the hospital. The first session focussed on the delivery, pain relief and signs of labour, teh 2nd on exercises and the 3rd on breast feeding. We made the decision together for our birth plan and we had a better idea of what to expect. He had the opportunity to ask a professional any questions he had. It also gave me the confidence that he knew what to expect, what the signs of going into labour were and we could talk about what we had learnt. Seeing as I was a bit nervous it was great to have him calming me down knowing he had heard the same information. I think (bearing in mind what they are about to go through) it is essential for the male partner to be present at the ante-natal classes.

Summary: your both going through it so you should both attend classes
