Advantages: Women have a lot more choices these days

Disadvantages: It's a tough choice that often leaves mums feeling guilty

I think of myself as a bit of both as I only work 3 days a week and so get to spend 2 days with my girls. I think the choice is completely personal to the individual mother. I personally couldn't be a stay at home mum full time as I need to retain the working me. I just feel swallowed up by being a mum being at home full time. Meaning that the girls get a depressed mum who can't give them 100%. When I work part time I really look forward to my two days with them and they get to spend those days with a happy, stree-free mummy (well almost!).

On the other hand I also couldn't go back to work full time as I don't really see what the point in having children is if you're never going to spend any time with them. I'm lucky that my mother-in-law provides the majority of our childcare and so I feel that they get a good balance of spending time at nursery, with grandma and with me. It works for us but it might not work for everyone.

Summary: The choice is up to the individual parents at the end of the day
