People are very narrowing minded about young offenders. The words "I blame the parents" is always mentioned when asked about this subject. Yes often parents don't bring their children up in a responsible way so they go off the rails. But also there are other causes for young people terrorising others for their own pleasure.

People who and away from the real world are happy to judge and critisise these people because they have never experienced what life is like on their side of the fence. What about people who's parents have died? Or kids made homeless or kids who get caught up with the wrong crowd? Young people who turn to drugs are continuously picked on because "They should just stop and get their act together".

Explain to a heroin addict that if they stop everything will be ok. I wouldn't because it's simply not true. Drugs are addictive and with drugs often comes unemployment which means they have to steal to feed their habit. They don't want to do it. They have to. Heroin is an evil drug which completely takes over your body and controls your every waking hour. It's never as easy as everyone thinks.

Kids who are abused by their parents sometimes turn to crime because they see no other way of leading a normal life. They can't face the day to day agony so they steal, drink & do drugs to take their mind of the reality of home life. It can be heartbreaking. Kids can also be evil and lead their *friends* into doing things that they know are no right but they feel they'll be an outcast if they don't conform to their *rules*. When you're young, what your friends think of you is the most important thing. Being able to fit is more of a gain than doing well at school/college.

The kids who hang about on the street and terroise the residents should be locked up but instead they are simply told to move on giving them the chance to do what has happened already, stabbing people who ask them to keep their noise down. These kids are just pathetic small minded little brats whose parents need therapy.

As for James Bolger. The two little boys who killed him were influenced by television & yes, their parents shouldn’t’t have been allowed children. This is one of the times when I agree that they were to blame. Kids are told to do things and most of the time they know that it isn't right, so they say NO.

On this occasion the boys knew exactly what they were doing & they knew it was wrong. Their parents should have been imprisoned as well. I can't understand how any child of their age is capable of tormenting a little innocent child for no reason other than *because it's fun*

Today's society is a sham. Their should be stricter penalties for kids who are either continuously arrested or for kids who commit serious offences. The kids in James Bolger’s case should have got life. But kids who just simply have a terrible home life should be offered more help & more chances to get back on the right track. The government spends money on unimportant things they should concentrate on what’s happening in this country before it spends all out hard earned taxes on things that wouldn't be allowed if we had a choice. But we don't have a choice. Therefore kids will get worse, more aggressive & only in 10 years time will we see the effect it has had on our country. I don’t know about you but I’m not looking forward to it.

Summary: Help those who simply want attention & punish those who aim to cause pain.

It's a hot topic in Italy at the moment - a 15/16 yr old killed a cop after a football match. Many have asked, including politicians, that both the boy & his parents be held accountable.
A child's guardians - whether they be parents, state institutes, relations (I lost my parents at 13 so my uncle was then responsible), etc should also be responsible for a child's moral values & consequences.
Teachi ng a child principles starts from day 1 & must be consistent & often parents don't think their small children notice their actions - well they do!

I am not sure I followed, you state people who "blame the parents" shouldn't judge, but then you go on and do just that....!

I feel with persistant offenders, instead of asbo's we should consider boot camps!
