Prevention is better than cure. Most people agree with this when applied to medicine but seem all too quick to forget that this too can be true of children and young offenders.

What must be looked at – as opposed the punishment and ‘justice’ to be inflicted upon a young offender – is why they were allowed to end up as an offender in the first place. It is all very well blaming the parents but who taught the parents how to bring their kids up? People are far too often expected to know how to bring their kids up with little or no help from the rest of society. I therefore argue that blaming the parents is not the answer.

Instead I would argue that the way to stop young offenders from becoming offenders is by giving them things to do.

Sports centres, cinemas, youth clubs even evening classes to help with their schoolwork can help the young to cope with the boredom that so many teenagers go through. Something as simple as some goalposts over the park can make the difference between someone shooting a football and someone who is shooting a person.
