Advantages: ok if they leanr by their mistakes, only a minority of them do
Disadvantages: old tricks being taught by old dogs
If you have children then you will agree with this statement. Ask any 10 year old and they will be horrified at what Robert Thompson and Jon Venables did to Jamie Bulger! I have spoken to many children of this age and asked if they thought killing a person, (let alone a small child) was wrong. They all agreed that they knew it was wrong and they knew the difference between right and wrong. I blame the parents. I know it's a cop out and everyone blames the parents when children do something wrong. But behaviour breeds behaviour, so what on earth had they been subjected to themselves? Adults instill a lot of morals into their children, very often without even realising it. If parents are constantly fighting, being abusive either to each other or the children then it's obvious they will come to think it is a normal part of life. Just look at the history of child abuse, so many victims thought it was the normal family behaviour. Then one day they grow up and develop values of their own, that's when the trauma sets in. Time will tell. They may change their identities but 'the truth will out' eventually. These boys will suffer for what they have done not only by the people around them, but on their own, in their minds or dreams. They will never forget what they have done and they should never be permitted to either! If they still think after all this time that it's ok to stone a person to death and drop heavy objects onto their heads, and abuse the anal region then who are they fooling? If they are released then it would be acceptable if they never re-offended. What if they did? There's no hanging or electric chair, so where's the deterent? What if they have mananged to fool the authoritites into thinking they have changed? It's happened before hasn't it? They may be able to change their idenities but never their faces! The public have a very long memory. You can run but you can
not hide!! Youngsters need adult influences to guide them, and that starts with the parents. What if they don't have any you ask? Then look to who they look up to and aspire to, there is always someone no matter how unruly or disruptive that person may be. The majority of juvenile crime is committed because of peer pressure and not on their own volition. No one wants to get to the root of the youngsters reason because everyone is just too busy. By putting them into institutions they are actually learning a lot more, the old lags always have a few new tricks to show them!

- 02/07/01 I know exactly what you mean, Personally I hope that they don't last 5 minutes when they're out. Even if they do have new identities, people will surely still remember their faces?? As soon as they turned 18 they should have been put in the proper prison and served all of their deserved life sentence. |
