The recent release of the two boys who killed James Bulger has re-opened the case in the eyes of the public. It is firstly very difficult to believe that two boys at the age of ten could do commit such a crime, and now it is difficult to believe that these boys' ten years later have been released back in to society.

I believe that most parents would agree that the boys should not have been released. What is there to prove that they will not commit any crimes in the future? Reading the details of how the two-year-old was killed makes you tremble. Recently the details of the crime were published in the newspapers, and until now, I like many other people did not know the extent of the crime.

Well what now? The two criminals have been released back in to society, with totally new identities. With these identities they can go on to live their lives as normally as possible. But should this have happened. I believe that the boys were not punished enough for their crime. Anyone who commits a crime as bad as this must have a criminal and evil mind, especially at the age of ten. How can we believe that the mind of those boys is not criminal and evil anymore? The details of how James Bulger was killed prove how evil a crime it was.

The two boys can be anywhere in the country, and this must make it difficult for parents of young children, as many will be afraid.

So what should happen to young offenders. Well I believe that the punishment should depend on the crime. However, regardless of age, a crime is a crime and deserves punishment. From what has been published in the press, it seems that Thompson and Venebles did not really have a very bad time while they were locked up. They had certain luxuries such as a playstation and personal tutor that most children don’t have in their own homes. So what kind of punishment is this? Did ‘punishing’ them in this way change them in to better human beings? The James Bulger crim
e was probably one of the most awful crimes committed. Being a parent I can just imagine how awful it must have been for the parents of James Bulger to hear the details of how their baby was killed, and to hear that he was killed by children. His mother to this day probably cannot forgive herself for losing sight of her child for that second.

What I don’t understand is how and why did Thompson and Venebles commit this crime. What was their background and how were they brought up. I believe that giving birth to children is one thing, but actually bringing them up as good human beings is the main and hardest thing, it is a responsibility of the parents. Parents cannot guarantee that their children will be good human beings, but at least they can try!
