When reading this please bear in mind that this is my opinion and is in no way a criticism.

Young offenders and what to do with them is always a hot topic and always will be, I think some of the time you need to look at what background some (note I don't say all) of these kids come from.

They tend to come from families where the parents are young or not emotionally mature enough to cope with the responsibility of their own lives let alone those of children so the children inveitable have a serious lack of discipline installed in them from the start, how can you tell a child it's wrong to swear when at home they hear f'ing this and f'ing that at home?

Also if a young offender is part of an environment where theiving, bulling, and violence is the norm jail is hardly going to scare them it will just give them a higher ranking in the world from which they come where the person who has been in prison the most is in some case revered.

To show what I think should be done to young offender's i've given a scale system which assumes that the crimes are not major offences such as assault which I think they should not only be locked up for but made to attend special victim support sessions where they watch a video with a counsellor showing the victims. For rape they should just have it chopped off no mater what their age. For murder nothing short of life sentence without parrol.

1st offence

For this depending on the severity of the crime and I will assume it is burglary, car theft, drugs. I suggest given a caution, and made to in the case of drugs to jobs such as clean toilets, collect the clothes for washing of people dying as a result of drugs use.

2nd offence

Let them spend a week in the big boys jail never mind this young offenders institution crap. Of course their would need to be provision in place so they would not be abused.

National Service, for a minimum of 2 years I am a great beliver in bringing this back. (I soent nearly 3 years in the army). I think it would help restore discipline which they may never had as a child growing up, it will bring out self confidence and teach a trade which due to skipping school they never learnt (don't forget bad boys and girls in the army go to colchester, without passing go).

4th offence

You will go to jail for a very long time, you will not be parrolled and you will serve your entire sentence (after all you've had enough warnings).
