~ My Opinion ~
Winzip - it sounds like something you would attach to your underpants or maybe something you would get your mum to sow onto your jeans but it isn't it's an application created to enable computer nerds to compress and decompress files on your PC with ease.
Winzip is a popular and is normally trusted throughout the IT world, I know I am and have used it since 2001 but other packages such as WinRar have become a real challenge to the winzip software and will find it difficult to remain the leader in the compression of computer files.
~ So what does this version offer? ~
Basically version 12 adds the function to handle photographs and allows users to share these with success. You also have the ability to zip to email which is a new capability of the Winzip series.
This version also comes with a built in email CD/DVD and FTP burning software which enables the user to burn zip files to disc in the blink of an eye. Obviously some of your file may be more confidential than other so encryption is available and maximises your security.
I have also been able to extract file just over 3.5Gigabytes so it can do quite a lot of functions all reliably and quickly.
~ Any downsides? ~
Yes there are - mainly with the photographic compression as it isn't that impressive and can be quite hard to organise your photographs using this tool. Overall this application adds little photographic tricks to its original winzip application and to be honest it isn't that impressive compared to what you would pay to get the full licence.
~ Costs ~
To buy a full version of winzip pro 12 you would have to pay around £20 - £40 and all depends on what version you purchase standard or full. I have looked around and you can buy it from Amazon.co.uk.
~ Compatibility ~
This version of winzip is compatible with RAR, LHA, CAB, Z, GZ, UUE, TAR, XXE amongst many more. Having so many compatible file extensions makes this version of the most flexible and useful tools there are out there on the market.
~ Conclusion & ratings ~
I personally prefer WinRar but after using the Winzip 12 pro it does have a few features that are different such as compressing photos but it just lacks a bit of organisation. My recommendation would be to get the standard version as you can get other compression packages for photos which will do a better job.
