Giovanni Rana Pasta
I love pasta and apart from in a restaurant this is the best pasta I have ever tasted so I feel compelled to tell the world about it. This review reffers to the Rich Italian Beef Bolognese Tortelloni variety.
Just Who Is This Giovanni Rana?
Giovanni Rana grew up in Verona, Italy and started out as a delivery boy at his father's bakery. When he was 20 he decided to go into business making fresh pasta even though most Italian families were still making their own pasta at home. He decided to combine his own recipes with those of some housewives he knew. Slowly as more women began to work and had less time to cook his client base grew. That was 40 years ago now Giovanni Rana's pasta is the number 1 pasta in Italy and is now being sold around the world.
Rana also patented a pasta processing machine that imitates a pasta maker's hand movements so that the pasta's texture will be a similar to hand made pasta as possible.
Put the pasta in a large pan of boiling water. Add salt and cook gently for 1 minute. Drain thoroughly and serve with a drizzle of olive oil and grated cheese or with your favourite pasta sauce
Keep refrigerated and eat within 3 days of opening. Suitable for home freezing. If freezing freeze on day of purchase and consume within one month. Defrost before cooking.
Pasta (45%): wheat flour, eggs 25%, durum wheat semolina
Filling (55%): beef 18%, tomato 16.5%, grated cheese, sunflower oil, breadcrumb (wheat flour, yeast, salt), pork meat 7%, processed cheese (curd, palm oil, rapeseed oil, milk proteins, salt, emulsifier: sodium citrate), carrots 6.3%, onion 5.3%, dehydrated potatoes, potato starch, natural flavourings, wheat fibre, whey powder, milk, celery 1.4%, tomato powder 1%, butter, yeast extract, salt, sodium bicarbonate, rosemary, salt, sugar.

Not suitable for nuts and mustard allergy sufferers.
The packaging is quite simply a plastic tub with a film lid. A picture of the great Giovanni Rana adorns the lid. Rather than a picture or the actual finished product or a serving suggestion the lid also has a picture of the ingredients that go into the bolognese filling.
The bottom of the pacK has Rana's mission statement on, the cooking and storage instructions and all the ingredients and nutritional information
Each pack contains appox 250gms and each pack serves two people.
As you may or may not know (if not have a look at my op on it) I work on the checkouts at ASDA, it's a great opportunity for spotting new products. These first caught my eye after christmas, I scanning through a customer's shopping when I noticed these. I said " they look nice" he said "they are delicious and they only take one minute to cook" I didn't believe him so read the pack then it also turned out they were on offer so after my shift I clocked off and went and bought some.
I'm quite a pasta fan and usually buy the Asda's own brand of fresh filled pasta but the fact this claimed to be cooked in 1 minute made it much more appealing. I have to say I was impressed.
As I'm so impatient rather than wait for the pan to boil I boiled the kettle, transferred the water to a pan and then added the pasta and the salt. After 60 seconds of cooking all the pasta had floated to the top of the water so i drained and served with a little oil and grated cheese as suggested.
Usually with supermarket own brand filled pasta I have found that it's quite easy to under cook or over cook it and the texture of the filling always leaves a lot to be desired but this was perfect, the texture of the pasta and the filing were restaurant quality. I was a bit dubious about not having any sauce on it but there was no need to worry the bolognese filling is so tasty I could of eaten it without any oil or cheese either.
I have now tried a few varieties of Rana's pasta and have never been disappointed even my kids love it and so does my boyfriend.
The kids do prefer a bit of a tomato based sauce with theirs, my boyfriend prefers it on it's own but I tend to eat it with a little green pesto but I eat green pesto with anything I can even on toast.
My only warning is keep an eye on the time cos if you do over cook it, it still tastes good but a lot of the filling will spill out into the pan.
Rich Italian Beef Bolognese Tortelloni (see review this one is my boyfriend's fave)
Prosciutto Crudo & Cheese Cappelletti (this is mine and my kids fave)
Fresh Ricotta & Tender Spinach Tortelloni (this is my mum's fave)
Sun-ripened Tomato & Mozzarella Tortelloni (have yet to try this variety)
Giovanni Rana also makes individual lasagne which can be cooked in microwave or oven.
This pasta now seems to be available in all the big supermarkets. It is generally the same price between £1.70 to £1.80 but ASDA often has it on offer at 2 for £1.50. Tesco often puts it on a 3 for 2 offer and Morrisons often have it on a BOGOF. I'm sorry I don't know about the other's as these are the only 3 near me.
It's brilliant, tasty and diverse, very convienent and cooks in a hurry what more could you ask for.
