When my granddaughter mentioned that she'd like a 'posh' buffet party for her 13th birthday last month I knew exactly where to look for some tasty treats, the M&S Food To Order service which I have used successfully in the past and been extremely impressed with.
One of the items I ordered for the buffet were these Mini Goat's Cheese & Mushroom Frittatas, of which I got 24 of these delicious bite sized omelettes for £10.
Not being someone who particularly enjoys the overwhelming eggy taste and texture of omelettes I was actually very surprised at how delicious and moreish these were. To be honest with you I enjoyed these more for the simple fact that they are Italian style omelettes which have been made with potato, this obviously greatly reduces the egginess and gives them a delicious fluffy yet slightly dense consistency.
The flavours within the omelettes are divine. The fairly bland flavour of the goats cheese compliments the beautifully seasoned potato perfectly while a mixture of oyster and shitake mushrooms adds a new dimension of flavour. It's quite difficult to describe the taste of these other than to say that all the aspects of the omelettes blend wonderfully together and I thoroughly enjoyed every single bite.
I was particularly impressed by the freshness and robust flavour of the mushrooms which completely transformed the omelettes from what I believe would otherwise be bland and stodgy snacks into a delightful mushroom flavoured treat. The mushrooms have been chopped and added to the mixture before cooking and this means that the flavour has spread beautifully throughout the entire batch of omelettes, the fairly thick slice of mushroom added to the top of each omelettes adds a nice change of texture and also gives you a nice strong mushroom flavour.
As we were planning on serving ours as part of the buffet I served them cold straight from the packet, although I did reserve a couple to try warm as M&S had assured me they were delicious hot. While I generally prefer warmed through food, I must confess I found these much tastier when eaten cold simply because the texture is far nicer. Those I heated in the oven became rather looser in consistency and the effect of warming the goats cheese up made the entire omelette taste a little greasier, they were still wonderfully tasty but I personally found that the separate flavours were lost somewhat amidst the warm potato mixture.
These are a reasonable size and personally I think the £10 price tag was extremely reasonable. Each Frittata is two bites worth and when I picked them up from M&S I realised that they were deeper than I had initially thought they would be. They're quite light in that even eating four I didn't feel full up in the slightest, this would ordinarily be a negative but when it comes to party foods you're really looking for those less substantial foods which won't destroy the appetites of the guests.
If you decide you'd like to try these, perhaps over the upcoming festive period when the financial situation is forcing more and more people to entertain at home rather than going out to posh restaurants, then the Food To Go concept is very simple. You order your foods from www.marksandspencer.com then five days later collect them from the store you have specified during the order process. These Mini Goat's Cheese & Mushroom Frittatas can be stored for two days after collection and M&S advise that they can also be frozen so perhaps this is an ideal way to spread the cost of your Christmas shopping and still enjoy the finer things in life.
