Advantages: Tasty and takes only 3 minutes to cook.

Disadvantages: None

Sainsbury's own brand Gnocchi is £1.50 per bag which is about 500g although it is often on special or buy one get one free. It can be frozen so you can take advantage of special offers.

If you are not familiar with gnocchi they are small Italian style potato dumplings - these are not like the dumplings you would normally find in traditional British dishes. Gnocchi is a great alternative to pasta so you can substitute it in your usual pasta dishes or salads. Gnocchi is not as bland as pasta so it can taste great with just a bit of pesto. You can find loads of Gnocchi recipes online including how to make the actual gnocchi yourself but like making your own pasta it is easier to pick up a bag at the supermarket.

I only discovered Gnocchi a couple of years ago when I was brought the wrong order in an Italian restaurant and didn't want to go to the hassle or wait of changing it - it was a revelation. Since then I have regularly been including gnocchi in various dishes - it goes great with all your usual pasta sauces and also with just a bit of pesto or butter. This particular Gnocchie from Sainsbury's is fantastic for an own brand - I have also tired Morrisons own brand gnocchi but this is far superior and I find the Morrisons gnocchi a bit rubbery. Sainsbury's gnocchi has a very fluffy texture and tastes great. As it only takes 3 minutes to cook (just boil in a pan of water) it is a much quicker than pasta to knock up a great meal.

Although it is quite calorific, a half bag (which is more than enough for 1 person) contains only 0.8g fat.

If you are a bit bored of churning out the same pasta dishes every week give this a try.
