Sainsbury's Indian Three Colour Pilau Rice
Advantages: Tastes ok and it's easy to heat through
Disadvantages: It is a really plain tasting rice that lacks seasoning
Once a week in my home we have a curry that my Mum makes. She used to buy a rice you cooked up yourself but of late she's been buying stuff you simply have to warm through instead to save time and mess according to her and we've had a mixed bag of results to be honest!
One my Mum does like is this 3 coloured Indian rice and I have to say when it turned up on my plate the first time I ever saw it I did think it looked very pretty indeed!
The rice comes in a clear plastic, square tub you can of course see the rice through and over the centre of that a sleeve that slides on and off it with ease is there. So it's a purple coloured sleeve and on the top of that I'm told it is Sainsbury's Indian Three colour Pilau Rice and that it microwaves in 3 and a half minutes or oven cooks in 50 minutes and that it contains no hydrogenated fats, artificial colours or flavours and is suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans and is suitable for home freezing. Other information on it includes an at a glance nutritional chart as well as a more in depth look at the nutritional values, the size is stated which is 500g, ingreidents and allergy advice is given (Not suitable for peanut, nut or sesame allergy sufferers due to the methods used in the manufacturer of this product) and contact details for Sainsbury's are given and then on the inside of the sleeve cooking instructions are listed.
The Rice Itself:
Well it's partially cooked by the look of it. Moist upon opening rather than dried rice at least. You can of course cook this from frozen or chilled too. In the oven it will cook in about 50 minutes from chilled or in about 1 hour and 15 minutes if frozen. You can also heat this in the microwave and it takes 3-3 1/2 from chilled or in about 7-8 minutes in the microwave if frozen. Mum has cooked this a few times and apparently with this it makes no difference to it really if it's cooked from chilled or frozen, in the microwave or the oven though she normally does it from chilled in the oven with the rest of the food she's preparing for the meal.
Easy to cook anyway as it simply cooks in the plastic, square tray it comes in and there's enough for either 2 largish servings of rice or 3-4 smaller one's of course.
In appearance it is three coloured. White pink and yellow grains which apparently are natural basmati rice colours? Hmmm I'll come on to that in a moment if I may!
Taste wise well it's rather a plain rice really. It does have a few cloves in there you can see and you have to pick them out if you don't want to eat those and you can taste a little cumin and garlic in there too delicate giving a little flavouring. Reading through the ingredients it appears to me that although I'm told that rice comes in the above colours, that I have to the conclusion that is not true and that the turmeric and beetroot red colouring's are what has been used to 'dye' some of the rice though it doesn't flavour it.
However it is a nice, unsloppy, baked kind of rice that is well formed and substantial. I like the way it isn't watery and/or sloppy but by the time it's cooked through it is al dente and simply rice! It does need seasoning however when it's on the plate cos to me this is really distinctly lacking seasoning! Not a bad rice though and I'm more than happy to eat it again in the future!
