      below par dinner

As I have previously mentioned I am currently following the Slimming World diet plan. With the hubster being on nights at the mo, I am on the lookout for quick fuss free filling meals just for one that fit in with the diet. I am a huge carbaholic (no wonder I am always on a diet!), and having enjoyed the Bachelors Pasta and Sauce I thought I would give the Tesco's own brand version a try to save a few pennies!

I bought the Chicken, Garlic and Wine as well as the Chicken and Mushroom one as part of the 2 for £1 offer that was on a couple of weeks ago, and cooked the Chicken, Garlic and Wine Pasta last night. It comes in a green packet with a purple banner and on the front there is a picture of pasta tubes in a thick creamy looking sauce.

You can make this either on the Hob or in the microwave - I always do it in the microwave in a casserole dish that I then eat out of as it saves washing up!! To make the pasta you put 120ml of milk with 280mls of water in a large dish. You can also add an optional 15g of butter but I did not do this. You then stir in the pasta, cover loosely and then nuke it for between 6 and 8 minutes (depending on microwave strength) stirring halfway. Then just leave it to stand and dinner is done!!

As the pasta is cooking you get an overwhelming smell of garlic which seemed to flood the whole house. After 7 minutes and a couple of minutes standing the sauce was still really watery so I cooked for another minute but this didn't seem to make much difference. Despite the watery sauce, the pasta was nicely cooked and really tasty. Luckily it didn't taste as garlicky as my house now smelt, but the lingering odour was quite off putting. The flavour to the sauce was watery like the consistency although was not unpleasant, but I could not taste any wine. Being Pasta it was a nice and filling portion, it is just a shame the taste of the sauce was so average

I had the whole pack on its own as my main meal, but there would be enough there for an accompaniment for two people. As part of the slimming world plan there is ½ a syn per packet if made only with water but there is no way I could eat it with water only so I used milk from my daily allowance. I have made the Bachelors ones up with only water plenty of times and not had a problem but I guess in this instance the branded product really is the winner of the two in this instance, but I still have the chicken and mushroom one to try yet!
