“ Type: Pasta „
I was starving hungry after work a few days ago and just wanted something really quick and simple to cook. My husband and I both decided to try this tomato and mozzarella pasta bake from Tesco as it was reduced and can be cooked really quickly in the microwave. This is an Italian ready-made meal made from penne pasta coated in tomato sauce with basil, oregano and topped with mozzarella cheese. It takes a quick 5 minutes to zap in the microwave or it can also be cooked in the oven which takes 20 minutes. The first thing I noticed once it was cooked was the delicious smell of tomato and melted cheese and this made me fancy it even more. The pasta was really soft once cooked and the entire thing was really tasty. I'm usually not so keen on such plain things and like to have extra ingredients in my pasta such as chicken and sweetcorn but this was surprisingly tasty as it is. The tomato sauce, little chunks of tomato and herbs made it really tasty and a little spicy and the cheese on top added some extra flavour too. My husband added some more cheese himself and this is another great thing about this meal, as you can add anything else you want to it. This meal costs £2 but I wouldn't usually buy it at this price as it's double the price of most other individual ready-meals. We found it on offer for £1 which is why we thought we'd give it a go and I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again for this price. For fussy eaters and even for children, this is a great ready-meal as it's really tasty and is a perfect simple pasta. It's also great for those who want to add their own ingredients to a quick and easy meal.
Ive not been very well again recently so ready meals have sort of become my saviour because I simply dont have the energy to cook anything proper for myself. Anyway my mom seeing that I was under the weather decided to go out and buy loads of ready meals for something quick and tasty for me to eat when I could manage to move from the sofa something that was a bit more filling than my usual toast. This is one of those ready meals she came back with. Im a big fan of Italian food anyway and mozzarella on its own is one of my favourite foods so I was actually really looking forward to trying this beause the image on the pakcet looked proper tasty and I was hoping that is what I would find when I cooked it for myself. Useful Information: Bought From: Tesco Price: Around £2 Product Description: egg penne pasta dish covered in a rich tomato sauce topped with mozzarella sauce. Nutritional Information: [Per Packet] Calories: 400 (!!) Fat: 10.8g Salt: 2.3g Im not sure if thats very good or not to be honest I guess it would be a lot lower in calories if you were to make it yourself and the salt levels are pretty high but for a once in a while, quick meal that shouldnt be to bad, if you like the dish. Cooking Instructions: This can be cooked in both the oven and the microwave but Ive found the latter of those two to be a) much quicker! and b) I think they cook better in the mirowave. I usually take off the plastic film lid and leave it nuking for about 3 minutes before I go back stir it and then give it another two minutes in the microwave. Ive tried cooking it for less time than that but Ive found the cheese doesnt really melt properly very quickly. And I thought the whole point of ready meals is that they were supposed to be quick!! Lol. The Taste: As soon as this was finished cooking and I looked into the microwave I was disappointed. What I was left with looked nothing like the image on the packet and it looked a bit boring if Im honest anyway I thought it doesnt matter what it looks like as long as it tastes nice so I carried on getting ready to eat it. As soon as I took my first mouthful I was surprised by how bland it was. One of the reasons I like Italian food so much is because it is full of flavours and this one just wasnt. The tomato taste even though it was pretty weak totally overpowered any taste of mozzarella so the cheese must have been pretty weak flavoured to begin with. I cant really comment on what the pasta tasted like because I dont really think any pasta has any real taste to it anyway but this just tasted really bland and weak. Not what I was expecting in the slightest. The most overwhelming taste in all of this meal was salt. Now Im a person who really likes salted foods but this was even to much for me, I found I was gagging for a drink after a couple of forkfulls. I did end up eating all of this because I was very hungry but I highly doubt that I will be trying this again. Overall Opinion: In all honesty this was a pretty filling meal but it doesnt really taste of anything so its basically a waste of money. I dont recommend this unless your looking for a quick, filling meal but arent so fussed about taste and flavours. Id rather make my pasta from scratch to be honest. Thanks For Reading x0 Salz 0x
I was wandering around my local tescos today frantically finding something to have for my lunch. Now I'm not really a fan of ready meals however time was ticking, I was hungry and wanted something warm and filling to satisfy my hunger. I settled on the Tesco Italian ... Tomato and Mozzarella Pasta Bake, an egg penne pasta dish covered in a rich tomato sauce topped with mozzarella sauce. The dish cost me £1.50 which at the time i didn't think was too bad. This ready meal is easy to cook. There are clear instructions on the back for cooking in a microwave or an oven so you really can't go wrong. When it came out of the microwave I peeled back the plastic wrapped to see a steamy pile of mush. It smelt good but it certainly didn't look good. It was hard to discern what the dish was from the first look. It certainly doesn't look much like the photo on the packet. For me looks are important and the look of the dish impacts the taste. However pessimistically i took a bite. The pasta was a bit hard but very warm, the sauce tasted of tomato but certainly didn't excite my taste buds. I couldn't really taste the mozzarella though I could see it. I generally thought the dish wast pretty bland and tasteless, the texture is okay but i expected a lot more. Maybe my expectations were too high. I guess at £1.50 I paid for what I got. I certainly couldn't have this as a main meal. Even though it is 400g i was still left hungry at the end of the meal. The disk is moderately healthy but as with most ready meals loaded with fat: 400g provides: 25% daily calories intake 19% daily sugar intake 18% daily fat intake 18% daily saturates intake 35% daily salt intake As a lunch with maybe some bread to eat with it is probably enough for one person, but defiantly not enough for a main unless you supplement it. I could see it being all right with a stick of garlic bread, a tomato and mozzarella salad and a nice bottle of red. Though if your going to go through enough trouble to make a meal of it, you may as well cook it from scratch. You could probably make this dish for cheaper, with larger portions and a damn site tastier for less than this price per person.
I bought these whilst on offer at £1 in Tesco's. There are two nights a week where my husband and I just simply don't have the time to cook, but with our New Years Resolutions to eat healthy we wanted something a little better than the ready meals we had been purchasing. We hoped this would do the job. The packaging is very simple and typical of the Tesco own brand but at £1 who's complaining, it's what is inside that counts. You can slide the sleeve across to see pasta in a tomato sauce with onions and two small balls of mozzarella. It definitely looks yummy. Cooking this in a microwave is very simple and quick. Although I no longer follow what it says on the pack. The pack says to put it in the microwave for four minutes and ta-da you're sorted. I pierce the film before putting it in and give it a stir after 2 minutes before putting it back in for the remaining 2 minutes. The Tesco's way didn't mix the cheese through the sauce and you'd end up with clumps of overcooked/undercooked pasta. It is far better if you have the time to cook it in the oven, but as this takes between 20 and 30 minutes it takes away the speed factor, which is the only reason we buy ready-made meals. Whatever way you cook it, remember that the plastic tub holding all the pasta will lose it's solidity when very warm and wobble, you don't want that hot pasta over your hands or kitchen floor. If you have a healthy appetite then this isn't going to be enough to keep you going. I always throw half a garlic baguette in the oven to eat with it to make it a more filling meal. As for taste - it is enjoyable but nowhere near as great as a pasta bake made freshly. At £1 and ready in less than 5 minutes I don't suppose I can complain though. As with all ready meals it is high in salt and as someone that doesn't add salt to my food I do find it a bit salty, so a little doctoring is generally undertaken in my kitchen before I munch on it. I add extra tomatoes from a tin and some grated cheese after 2 minutes of being in the microwave, makes all the difference. If you don't have to worry about the smell I really recommend adding a quarter teaspoon of 'Lazy Garlic' and mixing through.
I was very pleased to see that Dooyou has paid heed to my suggestion and has added this product for reveiwing on its site..hence my thanks to dooyou. This is basically a ready made 360gms pasta dish of pasta shells in a thick tomato sauce bubbling with cheese. I wanted to try it as it was reduced from £1.58 to £1 a few weeks back and then I went back to buy a few more packs as it is freezable too for a month from purchase date. packaging: Well this does'nt really inspire you to grab it off the shelf and put it into your trolley with the promise of its being on the table at the next meal..but is okish with instructions precisely written. ease off preparing: The dish is extremely simple to make as are all ready meals.Dish can microwaved - in just 4 minutes on 750W . When the dish is cooked, one has to be careful with the film covering as the trapped steam underneath can easily scald you. The dish can also be cooked in the conventional oven, takes only 20 minutes if fan assisted. The dish is equally good either ways. However personally I find the cheesy top layer better cooked in the oven as microwaving makes it go a bit crusty. Taste: Though a bit syntheticy in taste it taste quite good in fact unlike so many packed meals on the shelf today. The herby tomato sauce ha the taste of tinned tomatoes but the herbs are pleasant smelling not overpowering or understated. I found the salt content a tad less (must be because I have too much). Amount: Good enough for a mela for one and value for money..you just can't expect anything more for a pound ..do you? Nutritional Value per serving: Cal 400kCal Fat 10.8g Sat Fat 3.6g Sugar 1.1g Salt 2.3g Ingredients Tomato (38%), Cooked Egg Pasta (37%), Onion, Mozzarella Cheese (5%), Tomato Puree, Water, Olive Oil, Cornflour, Garlic Puree, Salt, Basil, Black Pepper. Cooked Egg Pasta: Durum Wheat Semolina, Water, Pasteurised Egg. Tomato: Tomato, Tomato Juice. The fat content and calorific value being small makes this relatively healthy choice for dieters ocassionally as well. Being a simple meal is ideal for small children for tea as well , or if eaten as snack or taken to work..and very cheap as well for a dish tasting that good I would say. Pack size just right for an adult but I would'nt say generous but you get what you pay for. wanted to add another line: this is a good meal for vegetarians too.
