Disadvantages: Poor packaging
Tesco Value Penne Pasta is good value for money or is it???
I think when I got this it was 30 something pence for around 500g of Penne pasta.
This pasta actually does taste very good, it has a nice texture and cooks in about ten minutes, of course with most pasta dishes the pasta is the base as opposed to the provider of flavour. If cooked right this pasta isn't chewy and is just as good as more expensive pasta.
I imagine if I normally reviewed pasta I wouldn't make a point of commenting on its size however I feel in this case it is necessary as the pasta provided here is actually very small, this is actually a bad thing as you have to put more in to make it look like you have as much, sure this is just a mental thing as 500g is 500g, but 500g of bigger pasta looks like so much more and I actually think that it might be as I think that 500g of slightly better quality pasta absorbs much more water so it is actually more.
This is a tesco value product so as you expect it comes in the normal blue and white packaging, in this case I would say that the packaging is actually way to flimsy as in the shop we found 1 split bag on the shelf and another split in the trolley, this is not good news for those who are going to keep it for a long time as they may not realise that a bag has been split and then it could be below the quality expected.
The basic recipe is just chuck it in water and let it boil, the packet shows cooking time of 12 minutes and this is probably about right.
Value for Money:
On the face of it at 30p per 500g it seems like much better value that £3 for 3Kg but I think that the pasta in the larger bags goes much further because as I have stated I think it absorbs water much better and therefore you have more on your plate when in fact you actually have the same amount in weight of pasta.
Recipes I have tried:
I have had this with just simple pasta sauce and also in a Tuna bake and both were very nice although I don't think the pasta itself contributed much to the taste in either case and was probably due to the amazing chef.
This pasta is good weight value for money, but I am not sure how great it actually is. Taste fine, cooks fine but the packaging is naff. 4/5
Summary: Taste like pasta and is cheap but I think there are better options even for money savers
