I use rice a lot in cooking, it is one of the staples in our household. Usually therefore, it makes sense to buy in bulk and cook the rice from scratch. However, in the interests of convenience and to save time I sometimes buy these pre cooked steamed rice packs from Tilda.
This 250g pack makes a good serving for one person at lunch, or as a side at an evening meal. I would never normally have time to cook rice at lunchtime, so this is a really handy product to have in the store cupboard.
The pack is super easy to open, it has a handy strip to tear off at the top. The rice is kept fresh by the packaging and I've never had any problems with this rice packet.
I usually add other ingredients to the rice. Brown basmati is a nice grain and does have a good nutty flavour as stated on the front of the packet, but when fried in coconut oil with some soy sauce and a handful of chopped spinach and some spring onions it really comes to life.
Tilda make a variety of these rices and I have tried a few of these including lime and coriander, brown basmati and quinoa and sun dried tomato basmati. They have all been tasty.
As a convenient pre prepared food item I would expect these rice packs to be on the expensive side, but they are often on special offer for two for two pounds so I tend to look out for these offers and stock up a little.
I do not get on well with cooking rice from scratch - it usually ends up either a stodgy mess or too hard and chewy so I have now taken to buying microwave pouches instead and find it much easier and much tastier than my attempts! Being on diet it is very handy having these pouches in the cupboard so I can just whack one in the microwave and have something tasty to eat in 2 minutes as it stops me picking on anything I shouldn't be!
The Tilda steamed brown rice comes in a classy looking, purple coloured pouch with the product name on the front and has little white line drawing pictures around the edge of the rice being grown and picked.
The back of the packet tells you a little bit of information about the rice with the microwave instructions underneath along with the nutritional information, Guideline daily amounts and contact information.
The rice is very simple to cook. You simply tear the top of the pouch by 2cm and stick it in the microwave for 2 minutes or heat a little oil in a non stick pan and stir fry for 3-4 minutes.
I cooked mine the microwave way because I couldn't be bothered with the washing up afterwards if I used a pan!
I was really impressed with this rice, it is really soft and fluffy looking without being stodgy and it tastes delicious - if I didnt cook it myself I would never have guessed it was cooked in a plastic pouch in the microwave.
The really big bonus for me with this products is that it is wholegrain which is better for you as I am dieting and usually wholegrain rice and pasta just does not taste as good to me as the other types but this rice was really nice and I forgot it was wholegrain when I was tucking in.
I had this rice with some thai green curry and they went really nicely together but I will definitley be trying it with other things as I enjoyed it so much.
