Kindle Leather Cover
Advantages: Does exactly what it is meant to, very asthetically pleasing
The Amazon Kindle was the best selling product on Amazon last Christmas and is quickly becoming the leader in the e-reader field.
However, you do have to buy the cover for the Kindle separately, and yes, this is a necessary accessory purchase. The Kindle itself is quite lightweight and you are quite aware when just looking at it by itself that it could be quite fragile and by itself not sustain the kind of general 'trauma' that you would put a book through by itself - eg just shoving it in your handbag/suitcase etc.
So when I received my Kindle as a present from hubby on Christmas day, the cover was a purchase that I made from Amazon on the same day. I decided to purchase the standard basic Kindle cover that Amazon produce at £30.99. A lighted version is also available at £50.99 , this appears to have a light built into it that can be angled around the kindle so that it can be read in the dark. Now, because I do not anticipate doing that and certainly do not want to pay an additional £20 for the privilege I stuck with the standard one.
The cover itself is only slightly bigger than the Kindle itself. It has a really classy mottled leather effect on the outer. There is a ridge on the right hand side where you can pull over an elasticated 'band' type thing which will keep the cover closed. The inside of the cover has an almost felt-like texture to it . In the 'spine' of the cover there are two plastic hook type things. The function of these is that they are then slotted into two specially placed holes on the side of your Kindle. This keeps the Kindle actually in the cover.
To be honest with you I feel that I have to quantify any review I give with the fact that if you have a Kindle then this is really an essential purchase and there is very little getting away from that. Also, at the time that I bought this, there were very few real alternatives other than the more expensive lighted version and the fact that this one comes in a variety of different colours. I understand now that you can get 'hemp' versions and also ones made by Belkin, but these are sleeves rather than covers in that they are cases that you take the Kindle itself out of.
In an ideal world, I think I would have liked one that was a bit jazzier but I am still impressed with what actually arrived. It is simple, yes, but it does look really classy - once it is in the cover it looks like a smart diary. On showing it to people I have been surprised at their positive reaction as to how good it looks in the case.
The leather appears to be of good quality and the case itself is quite sturdily put together to the point where I am more than confident that it is highly suitable to protect the Kindle. That said I do think that it is quite an expensive accessory in that it costs nearly a third of the price of the Wireless Kindle .
No doubt if the Kindle gets even more popular, then more varieties will become available. However, this is really not a bad start - no it is not particularly 'jazzy' or 'fancy' option but it is certainly functional.
It sits nicely in your hands when it comes to reading from it and does not really add that much extra weight to that of the Kindle. Therefore actually reading with the cover on does simulate the conventional reading experience more than just holding the machine.
Whilst it certainly comes from the school of 'doing what it says on the tin', the price is still quite excessive I feel, especially as you do not have any real choice but to buy it if you really want to make use of the sheer portability of the Kindle. However, it is really quite necessary if you have any desire in taking your Kindle out-and-about. It is also well designed as to how the machine actually fits into the case - complementing the design and the suitability of the Kindle.
Summary: makes transporting your Kindle easier
